Storyline
In a place soon to be known as The Valley of Death, in a small clearing called landing zone X-Ray, Lt. Colonel Hal Moore (Mel Gibson) and 400 young fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons, all troopers from an elite American combat division, were surrounded by 4,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in U.S. history. We Were Soldiers Once...And Young is a tribute to the nobility of those men under fire, their common acts of uncommon valor, and their loyalty to and love for one another.

The best war movie I have ever seen!

  2. brytte

    Realistic and well-made war actioner.

  3. gvpak

Gibson is fantastic and the story is great but a little too melodramatic.

  4. solly

Couldn’t finish it the first time but decided to give it another try…not a rewarding experience. Plenty of war movie cliches, nothing fresh.

I was only in on the tale end of the war, but this brought it home
I sat nearly stunned through the action scenes in this movie. I had a CO exactly like the character portrayed by Mel Gibson. What a tough nut.

I highly recommend this movie even though in places it got a little too sentimental for me.

  8. Grams

    Intense and Great!!
I really enjoyed this movie, the intensity, the characters, and yes the sappy Patriotism too.

Best War Movie in a LONG Time

  10. cheow

    everyone should see it
I don’t care about any of this crap of making up for other’s reviews. The fact is this is a gorey movie that was shot just beautifully. I know that sounds contradictory, but its the truth. Fine performances by all!!

We are rating the movie, not the war, not the real people it’s a MOVIE SITE!
Visually great with great effects but help me out here.

Why did they chose that story, that battle and those men? Surely this was going on all over the country time and time again. There was nothing significant about that place that was any different than the stories I heard about Korea and other stories I heard about Vietnam. I just don’t see why THIS story was told and thousands of other stories are not told.

The movie was just "OK". If you want patriotism read "War Letters" by Andrew Carroll

I am not a film student, nor do I pretend to have the qualifications…
necessary for rating a movie as an art form. I rate movies based on feeling and enjoyment; as I think most people on this site do.

Ok, I’m somewhat biased because I enjoy watching war movies. I enjoy them because they tell real stories about real people in stressful situations, and that is the purest form of drama. These movies also put me back in my place, and remind me of how lucky I am, and of the gratitude young men/women of our military deserve.

I don’t care if other war movies have done a better job presenting the movie from a cinematic standpoint, or that other movies have had finer acting performances. I don’t care if there is a Hollywood spin, that there is an over abundance of patriotic ‘flag waving’, or melodramatic scenes. I imagine that’s what life as a family in the military was like in the 60’s. The point for me is the story, and to witness the heroic efforts and feeling of brotherhood these young men developed, and the man they fought for. The man who promised his soldiers that he would be the first one on the battlefield, the first one off, and would bring everyone back - dead or alive.

It’s hard for me to imagine anyone criticizing this story, and not feeling any kind of emotion towards it. If you are criticizing the movie as a piece of work, then fine, but then you really are missing the point.

I doubt Reelerguy’s credibility and legitimacy as a reviewer, but….
I have to partially agree with that particular review of his.

This movie was way too full with "Kodak Moments," aka Bruckheimer-ish heavy handed emotion shots. Really it was overdone and the simplistic way to garner extra "tearjerker" points from critics and the audience nauseates me. It may work for some, but it doesn’t work for me.

And why did EVERY housewife of EVERY killed soldier have to be a hottie? Just the law of averages alone states that not every soldier killed is going to leave behind a hot wife to grieve for him who is already made up when the "letter" shows up. Give me a break.

That said I did enjoy the battle scenes in this movie. I applaud the fact that lately Hollywood has been paying more and more attention to the details of their movies. Details like the open prong style flash suppressors on the tips of the M-16s. The modern "bird cage" style suppressors would have looked ridiculous in this movie (Yea I know, a gun nut’s nit pick. What can I say).

They are getting better at portraying the "war is hell" concept. I just wish they just wouldn’t beat us over the head with it and leave the Kodak Moments(tm) where they originated; commercials.

    Please Read The Summary!!!
I was going to give it an 8 but this reelerguy(????) how shallow can you be? Is your brain so full of mush that you can’t look for the meaning in a movie like this? Or did you not see it.

It’s obvious to me that you are just 18 … it shows

This movie was very profound, in areas touching (put yourself in the shoes of a wife being told her husband has been killed in a war), yes some of the dialogue seemed lame, but these were not 90’s guys … these were soldiers in 1965 raised with patriotism, raised to love their families and their country (unlike the children of today). They hadn’t yet been jaded by the war they fought and died in, nor by the countless misadventures our country has had since.

This movie is very good but is NOT for children, it is intense, it is bloody and it has a deep message about war. A message that obviously went over somebodies head.
