Storyline
It is the year 1250 B.C. during the late Bronze age. Two emerging nations begin to clash after Paris, the Trojan prince, convinces Helen, Queen of Sparta, to leave her husband Menelaus, and sail with him back to Troy. After Menelaus finds out that his wife was taken by the Trojans, he asks his brother Agamemnom to help him get her back. Agamemnon sees this as an opportunity for power. So they set off with 1,000 ships holding 50,000 Greeks to Troy. With the help of Achilles, the Greeks are able to fight the never before defeated Trojans. But they come to a stop by Hector, Prince of Troy. The whole movie shows their battle struggles, and the foreshadowing of fate in this remake by Wolfgang Petersen of Homer's "The Iliad."

    "My all-time favourite movie!"
An excellent movie that is kind of reflecting on the story of the Illiad, but it is surprisingly different in some parts.

    ACTING: 10
Very good indeed. Brad Pitt did a marvellous job of starring as the main character. Everyone did well and I was pleased of this result.

    GORE: 8.5
There are a lot of graphic slit-throats for horror movie fans out there (NOTE: This isn’t a horror movie) and other bloody war scenes showing a lot of blood.

    DIRECTING: 10
Beautifully done special effects throughout the movie including the doubling of ships and soldiers (See this in the DVD)

    MY RATING: 10/10
    Thumbs up!

Epic Retelling of Homer shoots, but barely scores
You come to understand the kind of old Hollywood spectacle and grandeur that director Wolfgang Petersen was shooting for (literally), but unfortunately he misses the mark. If you stick with the excellent fight and battle scenes, you will find it somewhat entertaining, without the dramatic hystrionics.

    Entertaining
This is a good movie for men and women. The women want to see Brad Pitt, the men get to see action, fighting and explosions, WOW! Entertaining for everyone!

    good effort.
if this were an A-F scale, i would give this movie a B. A good effort, though not quite up there to other hollywood efforts like the A grade gladiator. Was an epic, though why did it not quite seem up to par? Was it because of the lack of scenery? Uninspired battles? Don’t know. left feeling a bit dry, but the characters made up for it. Big in scale, but small, too. strange. .

    Excellent!
Very well done telling of the Iliad. Hits all the iconic highpoints of Homer’s epic poem. Not overlong at all and really quite an adventure. All the actors are well-cast. Peter O’Toole is just great in a supporting role. The look on his face as he sees his beloved Troy in flames is haunting. The only thing missing is a sense of just how long a struggle this war was. Film is a different media that has it’s own constraints when dealing with such a literary classic.

Not a bad effort at distilling 10 years of war into 2.5 hours.
The story of the Trojan War reads like a Greek tragegy (no pun intended). It was your first real "all star cast" of greek heroes going toe to toe against each other. The end result was likely the deaths of many thousands of soldiers on both sides.

I say likely only because the actual history of Troy is shrouded in many layers of myth and time. History is written by the conquerors, not by the vanquished, so much of what we know is only as told by poets such as Homer.

No, Troy does not follow the Iliad faithfully as I expected it not to. Instead as a viewer I received an abbreviated version of the epic as told by Wolfgang Peterson. Sure there were plenty of factual errors, but errors really only relative to the original works. Who is to say that Homer himself didn’t fictionalize the actual events.

One of the aspects I enjoyed most about the movie was the abstract way in which the Greek gods were referenced. Since the battle of Troy was realism based, there was no divine intervention of any real sort, which gave the movie more of a human history feel rather than simple myth.

My biggest gripes against the movie were regarding the soundtrack. For the most part the soundtrack felt out of place and really did nothing to enhance the experience. In fact the music mainly detracted. Only the duel between Hector and Achilles felt appropriately scored.

Are we to see Sean Bean as Odysseus again in the future, perhaps as a sequel of sorts? I wouldn’t mind seeing that.

Too long, and not terribly well made.
