Storyline
In a quiet, isolated village in olde Pennsylvania, there lies a pact between the people of the village and the creatures who reside in the surrounding woods: the townspeople do not enter the woods, and the creatures do not enter the village. The pact stays true for many years, but when Lucius Hunt seeks medical supplies from the towns beyond the wood, the pact is challenged. Animal carcasses, devoid of fur, begin to appear around the village, causing the council of elders to fear for the safety of the village, the pact, and so much more.

    Possibly the Best of Four
M Night Shyamalan is being compared to Spielberg, to Hitchcock, to any other director behind any great movie. In my opinion, there is no comparison.

All directors and creative forces behind the scences have their own particular creative influences. All deal with particular genres. And all, at some point, are probably pigeonholed into one category. You just can’t do that- it takes away from what credit these individuals deserve.

‘The Village’ is the fourth M Night installment in an increasingly successful empire. It has recieved rave reviews from critics and harsh reviews from some movie-goers. Why the split opinion? It’s simple. Critics have the ability to disassociate new works with old ones, while movie-goers are constantly comparing one artist’s work to another.

‘The Sixth Sense’ started it all. ‘Unbreakable’ disappointed ‘The Sixth Sense’ fans but started another Night fan base. ‘Signs’ was mixed all over the place. I don’t think many people know what to expect from ‘The Village’, but I do expect that it will please everyone who is an M Night fan.

It tells a story of a society in the late 1800s living in Pennsylvania, fearful of creatures who reside in the woods that surround the village. They are taught early on not to trespass into the woods, not to show the ‘bad color’ (which is red- symbolic in film of emotion), not to question why they can’t travel into the woods.

It is a simplistic society, with good morals and values, town-wide dinners around the table, where families know each other closely and town hall meetings decide the society’s decisions.

A chain of events begins when a member of the town has a son who dies, and Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix) believes that if he penetrates the woods and goes to other towns, he can retrieve medicines to prevent other deaths. The elders, led by Edward Walker (William Hurt), are against it. What ensues is a story of courage, facing fears, and yes- love.

The movie is definitely tense and suspenseful, but if movie goers are hoping for another fright fest like ‘The Sixth Sense’, you won’t find it here. Night’s ability to scare you more by what you DON’T see is genius- you are experiencing the fear just like the villagers.

It all works for this movie- the score, the town (which was built specifically for the film and was a full-functioning set), the dialogue, the chemistry amongst the castmembers, the art directions, camera angles, costumes. What Night has created is a spellbinding masterpiece that is quite possibly his best film yet.

The cast attending a sort of boot camp to learn mannerisms, language, and also shared in the responsibilities of preparing dinner for the rest of the cast. They converted Girl Scout camp sites into bunks for themselves and for all intents and purposes, cut themselves off from the rest of the world during filming.

There are moments within the film that are breathtaking, beautiful, and masterful, all due to the hard work of the cast and the creative genius of M Night, who keeps in tradition and provides a stunning twist at the end of the film.

There is one glaring similarity between Night and Hitchock- Hitch appeared in every one of his films by cameo- and so does Night.

There are many familiar faces in this film, a few who have worked on past M Night projects: Joaquin Phoenix, Cherry Jones, William Hurt (who is excellent in this film), and Adrien Brody, to name a few. It is a kaliedescope of talent that propells this movie above and beyond my own standards, and I am a harsh critic at times.

I plan on seeing this movie again! Now that’s pretty rare.

    Lots of atmosphere, but…
…most will expect something more. Like his other not as good movie,Unbreakable, this one seems like it is a bit unfinished. Needed another draft maybe. Still it reminded me, in the beginning, of the same kind of creepy uneasiness I felt when I first read Shirley Jackson’s classic short story The Lottery. M. Night’s movies could never be just average Hollywood fare. They always engage the viewer.
