Not much to enjoy besides the performances

An intriguing story with superb acting, I give it thumbs-up!
Robert De Niro and Edward Norton score big in this movie!

  4. Games

    pleasantly surprised
I was expecting another average bit of hollywood fare, but it’s really rather good.

Very well acted throughout, although Brando’s drawl is dead annoying.

    Good suspense scenes as-well.

Had a lot of potential. Just fell short.

    Ok… but just ok.

It had it’s moments but I wish I hadn’t paid full price
It started slow, it ran slow, it was predictable, but it did have times where it was fast paced and intense. If you can’t get in to see it at a matinee then wait until it comes out on DVD and see it then. It definitely isn’t one the HAS to be seen on the big screen.

Star power put to great use
This movie would have been alright with a different cast. But with this cast, it was excellent. Everyone played their roles perfectly and I was thoroughly entertained.

  9. uthill

Good acting, slow middle, predictable ending.. bleh it’s a renter

  10. send2

Very well acted. Overused, cliched plot. These things dont mix.
It doesnt matter how good everything else is. Half the movie is the plot. Period.

Most will find the movie slow….
De Niro’s character is meticulous in setting up his operations, and so is the movie in setting up the final heist. I imagine most will find the setup slow.

I’m a fan of both Norton and De Niro, and this is why I went to see the movie. I suspect the two wanted to work together. Have you ever seen De Niro in an interview? It’s rare at best. I saw him on Leno one night, and you could tell he was really uncomfortable and did not want to be there. In the short time he was there, he did say Norton was an up and coming actor he respected.

Don’t expect any great performances from De Niro, as his character is not that complex. Norton does a fine job acting out his dual role (remember him in Primal Fear?). If you are fans of both, and would like to see them work together, than you have no choice but this. Otherwise, I would recommend Ronin or Heat if you are a fan of De Niro and this type of story line. Norton fans should see American History X, Primal Fear or Fight Club.

    Wait for DVD.

    Pretty good, but….
Not enough character development. You get a sense that there’s more to DeNiro’s character but you don’t see it. Same with every other character in the movie. They do spend 1.5 hours of this 2 hour movie on nothing but setting up "The Score" and getting to know the characters a bit. They fall short on that department however.

The plot twist a shocker? It was clever, but by no means a complete surprise. Attention to detail will allow you to catch the twist before it happens.

I did really like the two main characters though. DeNiro is a very savvy veteran who makes contingency plans upon contingencies and makes sure to cover his ass quite well. It was entertaining to watch him work.

Norton’s character appeals on a different level though. He is clearly unstable and you watch him slowly break down. You end up expecting him to do the things that he does.

And of course the end of the movie is wrapped up in a tidy little bow, signed, sealed, and delivered. Too formulaic, which makes the movie just a bit above average.

  13. update

Tony says "I think Marlon Brando ate the end of the script."
DeNiro comes to you as a theif. His character has no character, he is the same guy he was in Ronin, except unarmed. The stars of the show are Ed Norton as "retard janitor" and Marlon Brando as "crazy old fat guy" (These are actually their roles as listed in the credits). It is ok, but it has nothing special..and the film starts with 2 minutes of cool, then 20 minutes of ass, then it picks back up again.

Plusses- Ed Norton as a swindling conman and retard janitor. Marlon Brando as a swindling fatman and a crazy old fat guy. It all also takes place in Montreal which is a nice change of pace. This movie ends nicely, even if ever so abruptly.

Minussus- DeNiro just rehashed his Ronin character but added a hatred of guns. BOO! No gun play in the film, and no real action either. It could have been rated PG if you cut out a few curses.

Tony says "If you like retards, go see it for Norton , if you like crazy fat old men, go see it for Brando, if you like DeNiro, rent Ronin".

  14. CMSmbo

    This is an excellent movie.
Edward Norton does a superb job and is utterly believable. DeNiro does his typical superb performance. Brando’s role is little more than a cameo though there is definite chemistry between him and DeNiro. The ending is a shocker.

The suspense was absolutely killer. You will love this movie.
