I’ve seen this movie a million times and I still love it
This movie gives me shivers everytime I see it. The sheer scope of the emotions is amazing, the characters are so believable.

I simply love the chemistry the actors have. This movie is amazing.

    Very good adaptation…
I watched this one twice. Richard Harris did a great job as the old priest. And a great story of course…

I decided to give this one a full viewing due to its high average rating…
    And I couldn’t stand it.

I think James Berardinelli put it best when he said "Of course, it’s fair to say that these movies are not rigorous adaptations of the source material - in fact, much of what is interesting about the books has been swept away in the interests of developing motion pictures that will hold the attention of the average teenage boy. And that’s about the level at which the latest version of The Count of Monte Cristo exists."

The dialgoue and acting are unbearable, the parts that are supposed to be exciting are a bore, and all the interesting points of the book are simply not here. Even the plot itself is ruined. The costuming ain’t too bad, but the rest is pure crap. I was going to turn it off, but I was watching it with someone else and they wanted to finish it. Maybe it was worth it, because now I can give it the rating it deserves. The Count of Monte Cristo defines everything that is bad about Hollywood epics.

    Loved it!!!
I truthfully loved this movie. It had everything you need to satisfy both women and men. You had killing and a love story. I recommend this one to anyone.

    Enjoyed the movie
The story was not one I was familiar with (my husband couldn’t understand why I’d never studied it in school) so I was going in "blind". I enjoyed the story line but the movie was much more enjoyable for us because we’d actually been to some of the locations where the movie had been filmed in Ireland. We were just there last year so it brought back fond memories of a great trip.

    a great movie
I really enjoyed watching this movie. This wasn’t all swashbuckling and kicking of ass, but there was an actual story that kept my attention.

I have been of Jim Cavaziel and Guy Pierce, and this movie just pushed them up a notch in my book.

Can’t wait for the Time Machine to hit the screen.

An OK version of the venerable story
Well done, with excellent acting from Richard Harris. But I prefer the Gerard Depardu version, if you want a happy ending, or any of the earlier versions that stick to the original story. The revenge, which is what makes this story have such staying power, is really watered down almost to the point of being an afterthought in this movie. I can’t forgive the filmmakers for taking the life out of an excellent story and making it absolutely too "politically correct".

A Fine Remake of an Excellent Story
I really enjoyed this remake … I’ve seen several of the numerous versions but I liked this the best. The setting, the costumes, Richard Harris (he was awesome as the priest). All in all an excellent movie if you enjoy period movies. I’m not sure what the other review was watching when he says it was just another action movie … there’s not really that much action in it. So if that’s what you’re looking for is action then don’t see this.

If you like costume drama, you will like this one!
Actually . . . this was very good for an adaptation of a classic novel. The story is not new and most of us probably already know it. The trick is to entertain and keep the audience interested in both the characters and the play-out of the plot. Richard Harris is especially good as the Abbe Faria.
