Storyline

Much better than I had expected.

    Painful. Slow. Geezers.

  3. OOOOO

well acted, fun stuff…Clint Eastwood is an american original

  4. fao

See! Even seniors can have fun.
There’s nothing wrong with enjoying yourself — and that is exactly what they did in this takeoff of all the serious stuff ‘out there’.

OK, but Clint was too heavy handed; plot was kinda stupid…
I was mostly bugged by the stupid plot - Russian missile platform with a broken guidance system that only Clint could fix. Right. Everybody else was too stupid to come up with a plan B - instead of sending the Ace Retirement Center into space. Oh, well. 3 Beer movie - 3 beers just before it started and it was great!!

    Fine, light entertainment

OLDER FLYBOYS TAKE SPACE BY STORM!
"Space Cowboys" is the antithesis to "Armageddon." Let me explain. "Armageddon" was over-the-top and mechanical, though still a fun trip into space, whereas "Space Cowboys" is primarily concerned with leisurely pacing and characters of depth and understanding. In the end, these grumpy old cowboys are action heroes at heart yet they bear the burden of old age and Medicare worries.

Clint Eastwood (who also wrote and directed) stars as Frank Corvin, a former Air Force test pilot who later designed a pragmatic guidance system for a satellite. Apparently, such satellite systems that were innovative in 1958 are no longer used in 1998, though one has apparently found its way into the hands of the Soviets. Unfortunately, this satellite is hurling towards the Earth’s atmosphere and none of the latest whiz technicians know how to control it. Frank has an idea how, since he designed it in the first place, and he employs the use of his former crew of pilots to go into space and retrieve it. The former pilots include James Garner as a Reverend; Donald Sutherland as a ladies’ man roller coaster expert; and Tommy Lee Jones, a hotheaded pilot who still flies planes and bears a grudge towards Frank from the old days.

"Space Cowboys" marches along with a by-the-numbers plotline that includes the obligatory training session (including a sneak peek of these geezers’s butts), the usual shouting matches and confrontations with the reluctant NASA officials, such as William Devane as one gum-chewing NASA bureaucrat and James Cromwell (the tallest of the whole cast) as another, and, well, you get the drill. Once these flyboys enter space, the film picks up with some snappy, humorous dialogue and excellent special-effects.

Eastwood draws suspense in the film’s action climax because he brings such vulnerability, pathos and dignity to the characters, including Tommy Lee Jones as the widower who has a passing romantic interest in a younger woman (Marcia Gay Harden). Sutherland is his quick-witted smooth old self, a sight unseen since Robert Altman’s "MASH" or "Kelly’s Heroes" (the latter also starred Eastwood). James Garner can draw laughs with the barest of facial expressions, though his role often feels truncated. And good old boy Eastwood may not be aging like fine wine, but he still has a commanding presence (and is far more believable than in "True Crime" as an aging reporter).

"Space Cowboys" has sparkle and is illuminated by a fine cast. The story is old-hat to say the least and far too predictable, but these old pros still know how to put on a good show.

    This was a Fun movie.

It hit your funny-bone and torn at your heart strings.

Wonderful acting and Great choice of actors.

    Entertainment for older adults
At least this movie has some mature adults in it that us older folk can relate to, and the characters are actually likeable. I was thoroughly entertained except for one scene where Clint flubbed his own lines (poor timing, like he was reading the words off a teleprompter). Clint should probably retire while he is in fine form and not wait until he is a bumbling idiot like Woody Allen. This is the summer’s second best movie, right behind X-Men, and that is as good as it’s gonna get.

Clint Eastwood directs this cinematic adventure, Space Cowboys delivers it all!
Space Cowboys, directed and produced by Clint Eastwood delivers all the essential elements of an entertaining film. The story begins in the year 1958 with NASA’s most elite team of astronauts. Through a twisted curse, instead of the team going out to space, NASA replaces them with that of a chimp. Humilated and outspoken, the team disbands and we are brought into the present day.

In present day, NASA has just got word that a Russian Communications Satellite is orbiting in space since the Cold War. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, however the satellite is descending into Earth’s orbit at a rapid rate and something must be done to dismantle and bring it back safely. Things get worse, when the astronauts find out the onboard computer system is derived from a 1960s design. The scientist who created the system is either deceased or long forgotten.

The director of the space program (James Cromwell) reveals that the scientist (Clint Eastwood) is very much alive but his respects for the program would be slim to none since he was replaced by a monkey. Eastwood has long since retired and reached an age where he’s comfortable in his life. Much to his surprise, he is visited by two NASA employees who plead their case to him, asking for his help. He is very close to helping out until he finds out Cromwell is still alive and literally kicks the two out of his house.

In honor of his country, he decides that the only way to solve this dillemma is to re-group his team, Team Dataless. *drum roll please* The team is the combination of three geriatric sidekicks : Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones, and James Garner. Together they are inseperable, like the 3 Stooges meets Clint Eastwood. This concoction of legendary film actors creates some very hilarious moments. In order to meet any requirements of entering space, they must pass all physical tests exams, Donald Sutherland has poor vision but a good memory so he passes the eye test without any hesistation.

If there is one thing this movie shows that rings true is that no matter what age you are, nothing can stop you from fullfilling your dreams. Space Cowboys gave me that feeling of satisfaction, especially towards the end that anything can happen so long as you set your goals high. It’s an intensely watchable movie that will keep you entertained for its 2 and a half hours!

Wow… Not a lot of movies in recent memory brought out so many older people.
Clint Eastwood leads an all star geriatric cast of characters in this space adventure movie. Suffice to say that it appeals to the older gung ho crowd who always wanted that one last shot at greatness before the retirement home became the permanent residence.

A Russian satellite needs repair work because its orbit is decaying. The satellite has a US flight control system that was designed by "Dirty Harry" in his younger years, hence, he is the only one who can repair it.

Why so much effort to maintance a supposed communications satellite that’s 14 years old? Ahh, but that would be revealing too much of the plot. Suffice to say that it needs to stay operational and Dirty Harry demands that his "wild bunch" of the past help him to fix it.

Well off go the Fab Four into space where they discover a thing or two about the derelict satellite. Next thing you know the movie is re-enacting a scene from Dr Strangelove (- or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb). It has a requisite feel good ending despite some critical physics flaws. I would expect no less from Hollywood’s inept advisors of course.

It’s funny that I can actually name the four lead characters in this movie but I can barely name one or two actors in more "generation x" type movies. Hmm… No liver spots on my skin, and I’m not graying too badly…

Clint Eastwood - The main man, the leader, the guy with the .44 Magnum, "the most powerful handgun on earth." That’s a fib, by the way. Two more powerful handgun rounds are the .454 Casull and the .50 Action Express, but I digress… Also seen as Dirty Harry, Philo Beddo, and other such action roles.

Tommy Lee Jones - Looks somewhat out of place among these ancient male specimens. I didn’t think he was THAT old, certainly not as old as the others. But here he is. Also noted for his famous recurring role as a US Marshall who has chased Harrison Ford as well as Wesley Snipes. He’s a hotshot pilot with something to prove and the skills to back him up.

Donald Sutherland - One of my favorite old school actors who appears in one of my favorite movies of all Time, Oddball in the movie Kelly’s Heroes. He proves in this movie that he’s avoiding the "negative waves" and enjoys going out with much younger women. You old codger, you.

James Garner - Mr. Jim Rockford himself. Need I say more?

It was a fun movie. Clint is pretty sexy.
I thought the movie was a pretty fun movie. The characters were pretty endearing because they were old, yet proud of their age. They are funny and strong characters, and it was fun if you like movies about space discovery also. Clint Eastwood is pretty sexy for an elderly ex-Dirty Harry.

  13. andy

    Bored me.

  14. Cory

Good mixture of light comedy, action, confrontation, and tears

  15. Allie

A bit slow in places but still entertaining.

  16. arty

What can you say bad about a movie with Eastwood, Garner, Jones and Sutherland?
Sure they could have done more, but then it wouldn’t be simply a fun, and at times, poigniant movie about how politics and public opinion shape how some things get done. I will get the DVD when it comes out.

  17. iryssa

Excellent story, great characters, great acting.
Clint Eastwood carried "Space Cowboys" as the director on a steady pace, that did not lead you to the usual conclusions. The excitement was at an even pace…the story was about senior citizens still being a vital part of society…so it was at their pace. A very good family movie!

  18. bry

Klunky piece of crap. loose ends and plot holes galore. Rent "The Right Stuff".

  19. bdunn

Four Air Force pilots promised to be the first astronauts to the moon, then cheated of the opportunity, return to the space program to rescue an ailing Soviet satellite. They end up saving America from destruction. Fun and well-done. I’d see it again.

  20. Games

exciting special for old farts like me

  21. fetish

The first 3/4 of the movie was entertaining and funny…
They obviously spent more time on this part of the movie.

Introduction of the characters from past to present was excellent. There were some very funny lines. It’s just too easy making fun of old people…

The last 1/4 (the actual mission in space) seemed like bad editing, an afterthought, or a mad rush to make a release date. Still, I would recommend it.

  22. lawor

4 of the greatest old timers get together!
Pretty funn flick, with more drama than I expected! Not a gripping movie at all, but a pretty entertaining one. I think I’d wait for the video….

  23. tor39

    These guys are still great!
This film was another cross gender film like Coccoon. The first showing I went to I was one of the younger guys there (at 38)then the next day I went to an eirlier show and I was one of the oldest guys there. And the theaters were packed both times! The FX was right on the money! And the movie was believable - as long as they could pass the flight tests. By the way, John Glenn failed his flight tests too, and they still let him go up!

  24. bpound

Fun, with good performances, but too long and predictable.

  25. chris

    Geriatric space heroes! It ruled!

  26. fejd

Much funnier than I thought it would be - but the end could’ve been better…

  27. lionel

geez, these guys are lookin’ old! but they can still make a good movie!
It takes quite a confident group of actors to play an aging flight crew after years of playing strapping, young(ish) heroes! I was totally impressed by how lightheartedly the subject of age was handled. On the other hand, the romance that developed seemed a bit forced and awkward… I’d love to see the scenes on the editing room floor to figure out what the original script may have called for.

Great special effects, good acting, good plot, but what a goofy ending!
