See this movie! Or Lock, Stock. Doesn’t matter which one. But don’t watch both!
Lots of fun
Raw business
Definitely worth seeing! Better than what you might expect from a British film.
Perhaps the most incoherent film ever made. Okay maybe not.
better than lock stock
very entertaining but some of the dialog is hard to hear/understand (rewatch!)
Witty, enjoyable, large # of characters dealt with well..
Clever!
Actually, I’d give it a 9.5/10, Brad Pitt and company rock.
funny, absurd in some areas, but enjoyable
British films, like the vein of Trainspotting combines the grim with the comical. And in Snatch, this combination makes a very funny and enjoyable movie. You may not understand half the movie because of the Gaelic accents, or of some northern regions, but you’ll be laughing your socks off in the part that you do. AND if you like Brad Pitt, you’ll thoroughly enjoy his off-kilter character.
Brad Pit rocks!! If you liked 2 smoking barrels you’ll like this.
It was British. And I liked it!!
finally saw this thing. why did i wait so long?
this movie kicked ass. quick paced and full of quirky characters. all the funny talking brits made it hard to understand at points, but i had my trusty english to english translator with me so it was all good. the only down side though, is i’m scared to death of pig farms now.
For my taste, the best that’s currently out there.
Express Yourself
Yes, Guy Ritchie is mentioned in the above titles. And yes, I do know that he is Mr. Madonna. But I would like to end all discussion of Ritchie’s significant other right there, because the man has talent, and the charm it takes to get hitched with a pop diva is not the talent I wish to discuss.
Ritchie broke into America with his British hit Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It won him an MTV Movie Award as Best New Filmmaker, and his latest film, Snatch, should win him more accolaids as one of the better young directors in the "biz." Ritchie’s frenetic style alone is engaging, but the sharp dialogue of his films (and the British accents they’re delivered in) make them exhilarating.
Snatch has a lot going on, with the multiple stories centering on all of the characters trying to get their hands on a valuable diamond. When Franky Four Fingers swipes the stone, mayhem erupts. Among the vibrant cast of characters is our lead through the film, Turkish (Jason Statham). We also have a Jewish high-up, Cousin Avi (Dennis Farina), a gypsy boxer, One Punch Mickey O’Neil (Brad Pitt), a unkillable hitman, Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) and a boxing promoter from hell, Brick Top (Alan Ford). This colorful cast of characters (and I mean colorful) turn Snatch into a hectic, yet fun, experience.
Every character has their own niche, and Ritchie’s knack for comedy makes all of them funny, while still moving the story along. The best of the bunch is Brad Pitt’s Mickey, the boxer whose gypsy accent confuses everyone except his buddies. Mickey’s main goal is to get a new trailer for him and his boys, and he tries to get one out of everyone, including Turkish, the up-and-coming promoter who loses his main attraction to Mickey’s knock-out blow. Turkish is the pseudo-guide throughout the intertwining stories, although even he musters some great lines throughout the film. Turkish’s trusty sidekick, Tommy (Stephen Graham), is a nervous type who packs heat to protect him from something that he cannot even name. That protection may not be a bad idea with the emergence of Brick Top, who is working on a fight with Turkish. Ford’s Brick Top is a fast-talking, foul-mouthed bully who will undoubtedly become a favorite of anyone who sees this film. Even this tough-talking, fight-fixing tough guy gets involved in the search for the diamond, all of which is engineered by the inital swipe by Franky Four Fingers. Franky, played by Del Toro, caps off a terrific year for the potential Oscar nominee. Del Toro goes from playing a wise and petty crook (The Way of the Gun) to a Spanish drug war soldier (Traffic) to a Hassidic crook in Ritchie’s Snatch. Cousin Avi, who is working with Franky in acquiring this highly-wanted diamond, also has a motor-mouth, and he heads to jolly ‘ol England when he suspects Franky may be getting himself into gambling trouble. As the mayhem brews, Cousin Avi enlists the help of Bullet Tooth Tony, a supposedly unkillable hitman who is tough, but more subdued that Brick Top or Cousin Avi.
Phew.
As much as I tried to seugue into each character’s role in the film, it comes nowhere near the mastery accomplished by Ritchie. With so much going on, Ritchie’s film only gets better as it rolls along. While the plot surrounding Pitt goes on, at one point, Ritchie will segue into one of the other subplots. While disappointing at first (because Pitt’s scenes are some of the funniest in the film, and of the past year), Ritchie’s intent becomes perfectly clear: Snatch is only just beginning. Each of the subplots are so well written that it eventually becomes evident that it doesn’t matter which story Ritchie goes to next during the film. Whatever it is, it is guaranteed to be quick, sharp and funny.
Snatch is last good film to emerge from the year 2000 due to its pure entertainment value: it doesn’t possess the political and emotional power of Traffic, or the underlying mysteries of Unbreakable. Snatch is pure fun.
Quite simply, Guy Ritchie is shaping up to be the Material Boy of the next decade, with Snatch emerging as his Ray of Light. Sorry, it was just too easy…
Not as good as it thinks it is.
Some hilarious scenes, and a great job by Brad Pitt and the other Pikers. I want a Mickey One Punch movie! But really, all that violence just got numbing after a while.
It’s good…but haven’t I seen it before?
Snatch is funny, action-packed, and packs tons of that certain Indy je-nais-se-quois… but it’s about as different from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels as Battlestar Galactica is from Star Wars.
And do any of these movies match the first of their kind, Pulp Fiction? Or, I guess, Resevoir Dogs? I don’t know.
Outstanding, fastpaced, well plotted, funny and entertaining.
Huh what? What did he say?
Decent movie. Nice interwoven plots in moments. Some of the movie had a Pulp Fiction feel combined with typical British humor. Odd movie. Uhhhh… where am I…
Lots of interesting characters, well thought out plot line, and plenty violent!
This movie was worth the money so long as you enjoy gangster, pulp-fiction type movies. It’s one of those plots that goes round and round leaving you guessing what is going to happen next and just who is going to come out "smelling like roses" in the end. The violence is typical of an R rated movie and isn’t more than what the story requires. The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was that a lot of the dialogue was hard to understand because of the thick British accents (and I’m not even talking about the character played by Brad Pitt) which ninety percent of the characters had. Other than that, I would recommend this movie as worthwhile entertainment!
good plot, interesting characters, typical British movie
If you liked Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, then you will like this movie. Of course for the ladies seeing Brad Pit’s abs are always a nice bonus. This movie is not without it’s share of violence, although there were less fight scenes than I had anticipated. There are some recurring characters from other British films that appear in Snatch who play their typical thug roles, but the charm is not lost to repetition. This movie also has its comedic scenes which are a good laugh. Over all I would recommend this film to people who like British films with the Pulp Fictionish jumpy story line and the intricate multi charactered plot. The only short coming may be the thick British accents and slang used in the dialog.
