What was wrong with Tim Burton making spooky but insightful movies about the absurdities of suburban life?
This one suffers from some bad pacing and plot direction. Good atmosphere though
Disappointing
Maybe worth a matinee
Plot: 3
Originality: 4
Visuals: 7
Acting: 4
Overall: 4.5
The occasionally excellent visuals make up for my disinterest with the rest
loved the style and atmosphere - Depp was excellent
Very imaginative if you like this kind of movie. Not for all audiences.
another great burton flick.
if you like his style then you’re in for a treat.
great elfman score, and as usual great performances.
If you like Depp and Burton you’ll like this. IF not, it’s a 5 for you
Not as funny as I thought. Kinda scary
Wish it was less scary and more funny. I like Tim Burton. And this was a very dark movie. Johnny Depp is over dramatic. Film was kinda boring.
Tim B always makes a pretty movie
Crappy and long.
Achieves part of what it set out too, but it was isnt that downgrades it
Very grapfic, scary
Spooky and silly.
Sleepy Hollow is directed by Tim Burton, who is responsible for such movies as BeetleJuice, The Night Before Christmas and Frankenweenie. Yet, Sleepy Hollow is a different approach to an age old classic.
This version of Sleepy Hollow seems to be the only one faithful to the imagery provided by the book. Anyone who has read ‘Sleepy Hollow’ can tell you the story is very dark and gloomy revolving around a spooky theme. Tim Burton’s version does this well with it’s haunting special effects. As the subtitle implies, "Heads will roll" - they do in such a gruesome manner.
Ichabod Crane played by Johnny Depp is the investigator sent to Sleepy Hollow looking into the deaths of several prominent people in the community. Throughout the course of the story he pieces together the murders as a personal attack rather than random murders. All of them connected to the infamous "Headless Horseman" who is the evil maniacal creature who springs from his grave at the base of a tree to cause havoc on the town.
This evil figure is from the depths of hell and proves to be a challenge for the rather clumsy Crane. With it’s dark mood and spooky fog-laden forests, Sleepy Hollow is a fun movie that captures the murky theme of the book. Kudos to the chopping off of heads which is done so gruesomely, but effectively so.
haunting imagery, so-so plot
Tim Burton knows how to create atmosphere, but he needs to make sure there’s a solid plot to fill it.
Sleepy Hollow is a great visual thrill, and I think most 10-13 yr old boys will like it. Also, if you appreciate excellent editing/cinematography/special effects, you will certainly enjoy the movie.
When it comes to plot and characters, however, the movie falls a little short. Depp and Ricci are good as usual, but they dont have much to work with from the get-go. The plot is.. well.. it’s a horror movie plot - and it’s no Event Horizon.
So, the best advice I can give is to see this movie if there isn’t a Magnolia or American Beauty at your theater, but otherwise, save some money. Fun cinema, but hardly memorable.
Johnny Depp is Priceless!
Although the movie was very, very average, Johnny Depp’s portryal as Ichabod is absolutely priceless! Never have I seen such a perfect portrayal of a fussy 18th century gentleman before (mind you, I haven’t wantched many films on the 18th century anyway…).
In summary, if you can put up with an average film, its worth it to see Johnny Depp in this one!
Tim Burton’s super-gloom feel is superb….
I will never get tired of seeing Tim Burton’s movie’s for the atmosphere and ambience that he and only he can create. The Headless Horseman was a real treat, as was the fight choreography.
The stunning visuals and head-chopping effects are worth the price of admission.
Tim Burton does not do it for me. Style isn’t everything.
Get over it people, all of Tim Burtons movies are starting to look the same. It’s getting old, just like movies by Quentin Tarantino.
Visually delicious, but not much substance.
I love Tim Burton’s movies, and Sleepy Hollow is a great example of what he does right…and what he sometimes does wrong. On the Burton scale, I’d rank it higher than Mars Attacks, but not quite as high as Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood.
One thing TB knows is visual flair — and Sleepy Hollow has tons of it. The creaking, gothic sets and moody atmosphere are as good as anything he’s done before — including the Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands. And the story — a slightly updated version of the classic Legend of Sleepy Hollow — is feisty and fun.
But beneath the impressive art direction and the Termintor2-style incarnation of the Horseman himself, there’s not a whole going on in Sleepy Hollow. The romance between Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci is as pale as their complexions. And the whodunnit mystery surrounding the identity of the person or persons who seem to be summoning and controlling the Headless Horseman seems kind of arbitrary.
Ultimately, though, this is a movie about great gothic atmosphere and lopped off heads. Lots and lots of lopped of heads. And as far as that goes, it’s pretty tasty.
A little too much formula for a great movie, but enjoyable nonetheless
Having waited for weeks to see this, I went in with high expectations, and was not, for the most part, disappointed until the end, which had a rather predictable turn of events. Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci are excellent in their respective roles of Ichabod Crane and Katrina van Tassel, although Ricci looked weird with blonde hair. The application of common sense to an uncommon problem made for an interesting storyline as Ichabod Crane struggles with not just his role as investigator of murders in the tiny town of Sleepy Hollow, but with his own demons from his childhood. Katrina van Tassel’s own strange character twists considering the conservative town she grew up in add a bit of needed flavor to the plot. Visual and effects are very well done, although not stunning, and music is used as an atmosphere builder, instead of as a supplement — always a good thing.
Surreal and moody, creepy and funny, an all around superb film.
