The kids seemed to like it better than me.
Not much for adults here. Oh, all right, there are a few bits, but mostly this is one for the little kids. We are getting to the point where CGI alone won’t put this in the home library for me. Just doesn’t have that "thing" that the PIXAR crew seem to always be in touch with in their stories.

Lots of Bells and Whistles…But What’s Under the Hood?
There is a questionable scene at the beginning of Robots that effectively ruins the mood of the rest of the film, and which it never really overcomes. It is when a robot bounces all over town, proclaims he’s going to be a father, and comes home only to hear his wife say, "You missed the delivery." Then she holds up a box filled with assembly-line parts and they proceed to build their own child.

It would be the perfectly twisted, darkly humorous device for an episode of The Twilight Zone. Unfortunately, this isn’t The Twilight Zone; this is a children’s movie, and the fact that the scene is performed by cute characters and is meant to make children laugh and their accompanying adults smile makes it all the creepier.

After that, the movie gets a lot better and funnier, but now we have the unfortunate ability to perceive just how creepy and inhuman the robots can be at times. That said, though, the movie isn’t that bad…but certainly not a Shrek or Incredibles. The animation is dazzling, and there are some high-energy, hyperactive scenes that feel like you’re taking a trip to an amusement park in the comfort of your air-conditioned theater. Much of the humor is provided by the always-hilarious Robin Williams, voicing the absolutely delightful Fender.

Still, though, he and his fellow superstars (Ewan McGregor, Mel Brooks, and Halle Berry, just to name a few) can’t overcome the awkward inhumanities of their characters and a cliched script. It’s a cute, fun little movie, but don’t expect for this one to find a place among Toy Story and Finding Nemo on your kid’s video shelf.
