    Take me there
It’s not everyday you see a moview with simple visual effects, beautiful scences/cinematogprahy and great acting, that provoke one’s emotions, but this drama between a father’s job and a father’s responsibility really spark true emotions in you.

From the same man that brought "American Beauty", really prove he has talent in flimmaking.

Not as good as advertised. I was really disappointed and BORED!
I’ve been traveling a lot and didn’t have the opportunity to go to the movies so I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie for awhile.

I wish I’d waited for the video, this was highly overrated, slow, marginal acting … I was massively disappointed.

    great acting—-intriguing story

so very boring, so very overrated
It floors me that something as completely unamazing as this film can still manage good reviews. The dialogue is a bunch of supposedly poignant bullshit, the characters are dry and the pace of the film drags on, plodding towards an unsatisfying ending. Even Jude Law’s character, a degenerate hit man with a disturbing photography fetish, can’t save this film. How can Sam Mendes possibly fall from the grace that was American Beauty?

Almost on the same level as "American Beauty
It is rare to see a director make two great movies back-to-back. It is even more rare for those two great movies to be a director’s first and second feature films in his career. But Sam Mendes is gifted. His "American Beauty" grossed over $100 million while in theaters, and went on to win Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography (had it won for Best Actress, it would’ve been only the fourth movie in history to win the "big 5," along with "It Happened One Night," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest," and "The Silence of the Lambs"). Now his "Road to Perdition" is being hailed as "the first Oscar movie of the year." It too could go on to win a bunch of awards, but before we get into that, I’d like to address the success it has already achieved. With an underwhelming advertising campaign, an opening weekend on only 1797 screens, and never earning more than $25 million over a single 3-day span, "Road to Perdition" has remained in the box-office top 10 for five weeks straight and is well on its way to surpassing the $100 million mark, where it will officially be considered a blockbuster. It’s ranked #128 over at IMDb, and is #5 here at MovieComments. How did this happen? Simple word-of-mouth. When a movie is quality, people talk about it. And when people talk about it, others become interested. The reason there is so much buzz surrounding this movie is because of its great acting, its stark lighting, its beautiful cinematography, its constructed sets, its believable plot, and its touching ending. These elements combined make for a worthwhile trip to the movies, and this film is worth seeing.

It was well done the story was good but it lacked something
And I’m not sure what it was. I wasn’t as impressed with Tom Hanks as I thought I would be. He was a little … I don’t know, wooden maybe. But maybe he was supposed to be that way because what would kind of personality would a hitman have? It is definitely worth seeing, and I’ll probably go see it again because I walked away a little unsatisfied.

    Great story

  10. phased

    beautifully rendered cinematic graphic novel
I enjoyed this movie - well worth seeing for its lush, atmospheric cinematography. Some scenes played out longer than they needed to - as if the director was trying to squeeze out every last drop of drama before cutting. Tom Hanks, IMHO, a strong but overrated hollywood actor seemed a bit too bland - and perhaps his pampered lifestyle prevents him from playing with sufficient intensity.

The main missing ingredient is the sort of rough around the edges grittiness from actors and production that would elevate the film from entertainment to something sublime.

    Violent story…. technically well done
The whole movie has a cold veneer to it. It never really lets you warm up to any of the characters… I have to say, though, despite that, it’s likely to be in the running for Oscar. Tom Hanks does a good job playing a conflicted bad guy.

The visuals are amazing, as are the performances
I didn’t think too much of the story in Road to Perdition but all the other factors, particularly the cinematography, made up for it. Top-notch movie.

    Impressive!
I’m torn between an 8 and a 9 on this one. Maybe a second viewing will help me decide..

Very well directed for certain, and the story was tragic and thrilling and had a strong underlying current of fatherly love.

    I’ll take the Thompson…
At its core the movie is about revenge and taking care of your own. It’s a really simple plot and there weren’t any real honest to goodness twists. Tom Hanks once again shows that he can be successful at yet another unique role for him.

The simple moral dilemmas presented made sure that there would be plenty of opportunity for .45ACP slugs to rip through air and flesh alike. The "Chicago Typewriter" writes its bloody tribute to the savagery of the early mob era. Ya gotta love it.

This is a very satisfying movie, if a bit slow paced. Not much of a date movie unless you want to show your lady that you can be a human being once in a while by sniffling on cue at the poignant scenes… and still enjoy the devastation unleashed by the satisfactory "ra ta-ta-ta-tat!" Ahhh… I’ll take the Thompson…

Sam Mendes delivers a terrific follow-up to the award-winning ‘American Beauty’.

  18. domer

    Tom Hanks…….Paul Newman…….nuff said
Sitting down in the theater, I already knew this would be a great film. When you have actors with track records as good as these two, it’s not IF it will be good, but HOW good it will be. Let’s try to answer that.

Story: 9, not original but told very well

Acting: 10, look at the cast for god’s sake

Flow: 8, it slows down a bit too much at times, this could have been edited a little more

Directing: 9, slick and smooth, great locations and visuals, possible average scenes were brought to life with great angles and movements

    Style above substance…
a very stylish movie..great sets, costumes, fantastic photography, etc. the story was rather simple, and well, it was good, but, Sam Mendes slipped from "American Beauty". i did like the running symbolism of the coin throughout the movie.

  20. mopz1

    Tom Hanks is wonderful.
Not the typical, cheap thrills, junk that seems to be showing up in theaters now. This is a film with real depth, a good story with real stars. Paul Newman hasn’t been around for a while but he’s as good as ever and Tom Hanks is again proving that he’s a real actor not just a celebrity-star-name-personality. We loved it!

  21. mucha

It’s hard to find many flaws with this movie but
    bleh nevermind.. i erased it.

The summer’s best so far, go see it
