Back to Basics
Now this is a pretty rare occurence. The more I watched ‘Hannibal’, the less I liked it. The more disappointed I was by the not-so-artsy way it was shot. The more disenchanted I have become with the waste of acting talent- Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore, Ray Liotta, Gary Oldman. When I heard that another installment into this trilogy was to be completed, I was a little more than dulled by the news.
I did go see it, though, because I think that Anthony Hopkins is one of the most spellbinding actors of our time, no matter how rotten some of his movies can be. The real question was would this latest sequel (or prequel, as it were) be able to reaffirm the faith of movie goers? The answer is yes.
There is less gore in this film than in ‘Hannibal’, and the creative talent behind the scenes wisely chose to focus more on the artistic side of movie making than on scare tactics. This movie is based on the very first book of the Hannibal Lecter series by Thomas Harris, and introduces us to a few key players: Agent Will Graham (Ed Norton), Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes), Jack Crawford (Harvey Keitel), Dr Chilton (Anthony Heald), Barney (Frankie Faison), and of course Dr Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). Though Dr Lecter has a pretty small role in this movie, (he is being requested by Agent Graham to help catch a killer known as The Tooth Fairy), it is instrumental, as we get to see how Lecter was caught in the first place.
The film far exceeds it’s predecessor for many reasons, but the most apparent is because the producers wisely chose to return to film making basics- we are most scared by things that we don’t know- not by watching a man’s head get cut off. We see it on the news.
The ending, in particular, is memorable, and will probably bring a smile to the faces of this trilogy’s fan base.
As much as I disliked Hannibal, i LOVED Red Dragon
Very enjoyable because they didn’t waste their money on pointless, gruesome FX.
Tyler Durden isn’t the guy with a split personality in this flick…
The perennial Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors. This puny looking but versatile actor has always impressed me with the roles he takes on.
I’m sure enough people know the general plot by now, so I’ll skip all of that. Instead, I will say that the movie is better than Hannibal overall, but I really couldn’t rate it higher. Or maybe I should rate Hannibal lower. Hmm…
There are several underdeveloped plot points. While we know just enough about the "bad guy" in the film, I felt that delving a bit more into his background would have given the film greater depth. Perhaps they didn’t show anything because we’re not supposed to feel sorry for his character?
Time for another taco supreme.
Lector is a lot scarier behind bars than when he’s on the loose.
Actually pretty good

Not quite Silence of the Lambs, but better than Hannibal.
way better than hannible not sure if better than part one, but a solid 8.0!
More like Silence. Hopkins, Norton, Fiennes make a good team.
