Storyline
Christian, a young wannabe Bohemian poet living in 1899 Paris, defies his father by joining the colorfully diverse clique inhabiting the dark, fantastical underworld of Paris' now legendary Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and newly-discovered electricity, the poet-innocent finds himself plunged into a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair with Satine, the club's highest paid star and the city's most famous courtesan. Their romance is played out against the infamous club - a meeting place of high life and low, where slumming aristocrats and the fashionably rich mingled with workers, artists, Bohemians, actresses and courtesans.

An assault on the eyes .
Moulin Rouge lacks engaging characters, the music seems corny and the story is simplistic and trite. A waste of time.

  2. fedda

    yawn
An epileptic attempt that comes across as more insipid than sentimental.

You’ve got to appreciate what Baz tried for here, but he really missed the mark.

With each passing minute it got better and better

Colorful, but annoying editing takes away from it

Absolutely amazing, a huge achievement in film-making.
Take sex, drugs, 19th century Paris, a penniless poet who falls in love with a prositute, throw in a little music and what have you got? One of the greatest movies ever made and that’s not even close to being overstated.

  8. petit

The only phrase I could think to describe it is: ‘Spectacular, Spectacular’!

what?!!! horrible. cliche. boring. the only thing decent was the cinematography.

Well directed, produced, good music. Musicals just aren’t my thing.

    Well I changed my mind
I must have had a headache or something when I saw this the first time. I saw it again on the plane the other day and I liked it. It was bit weird, yet compelling. The music was good .. it’s interesting how they mixed in the lyrics from modern popular songs. Classic love story, story line. Great villain, great hero, and of course the beautiful heroin.

I was wrong the first time … this movie is GOOD not bad.

New Hollywood style, old Hollywood concept
Ewan McGregor can sing to me anytime! Who knew I would actually like Elton John’s "Your Song"? Contemporary pop songs, even the ones that would normally make me change the radio station, worked for this musical. This movie takes the glitz of musicals of the big Hollywood studios and combined it with the two things that would make a modern audience sit through it…experimental director and songs everyone knows the words to. The chemistry between Kidman and McGregor is believable, John Leguizamo’s is, as usual, fantastic in his role. The movie is quickly paced and ends just before you would start looking at your watch.
Overall, I think this is a good date movie. Enough love and emotion for her, and enough of Lurhman’s style to keep him in his seat.

    Nichole was pretty hot.

    Loved Nicole
When I found out after the movie that Nicole sang her own songs, wow. I really liked it. BUT the male lead, ugh, near the end I wanted to get sick with his high pitched voice. SLOW singing. The movie it self was overall good. Just the male lead getting to me with that voice wanted to make me leave. Haaha. Go see it. Good music good acting by Nicole.

    Old Hollywood Glitz Is Back!!
I found this movie thoroughly refreshing and delightful. Story-line was a bit uneven in spots, but this film has something new at every turn!!!
Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and the rest of this splendid cast were a total treat. It would be nice if we could look forward to more of the same.

    LOVED IT!!!
Moulin Rouge was the best movie I have seen in a long time. Its only fault was that the end was slow…like you knew what was gonna happen and they kinda drew it out! But other than that it was soooooo good!!! Go see it…the songs alone are funny as heck and "Like a Virgin" still has me laughing!

  19. bondaz

this was a very stupid movie

  20. ydwj

This movie was better than I thought it would be.
The first half hour was sensory overload and even though the stars had good singing voices and the overall look of the film was lush and colorful, it was still too slow in the second half.

A very modern opera Just great

    this is just the beginning….
if u like musicals, then u may like this.
there’s lots of cool music, and great costumes, not to mention Nicole Kidmans’ glorious hair colour! this movie moves along briskly..as did the directors’ previous musical, "Romeo and Juliet". i’m hoping, with any success, "Moulin Rouge" helps usher in a new era of musicals…we can sure use something exciting!
