This is the Sci-Fi movie that comes to perfect as close as possible.
Speilberg reigns. Cruise is forgiven. Farrell proves he can act. ILM has done it again. The story is one-of-a-kind.

This is the movie that comes to perfect as close as possible.

    ————————————————————————

    What it’s about

We have John Anderton, played by Tom Cruise who is a cop at the Department of PreCrime all for the system of predicting murders and then stopping them before they occur. We enter the movie as if on a regular day at PreCrime with Anderton coming in to see "what’s coming". Through stunning realism in special effects, the "PreCogs" (the ones that see the future) give off images which are then displayed on a circular glass fixture from which Anderton, with motions like a composer, goes through the images which are preduced by the PreCogs to find out exactly where the future murder is going to take place. Through technology, the "cops" if you will, are already able to know the name(s) of the victim and perpetrators, as well as pin-point the exact time when the crime will occur. To John, this is a regular day on the job, until Federal Agent Danny Witwer shows up to "test" The System for flaws. Naturally, John is annoyed and through smart dialogue explains to Danny why stopping a future murder is not wrong, because Danny’s arguement is that they have not commited a crime…yet. Foolishly, someone gives authorization for Danny to go into the "Temple" where the PreCogs are held. Not to give anything else away, this is a bad thing.

The next day, things get worse. The PreCogs show images of John Anderton killing someone…someone he doesn’t even know. All that John has is 2 minutes to run. Just run. And the rest of the beautifully written dialogue and perfectly thought through script is shown throughout the rest of this near three hour film (with trailers).

    The Directing

Steven Speilberg shows what it takes to make a great story even better. I have never doubted Mr. Speilberg’s ability to direct a quality film (think Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Schindler’s List), but things became questionably after last years A.I., which unfortunately is not fun to continually keep watching. This is the complete opposite of Minority Report. I can watch this film 100 more times, and still not notice all the little things which have been put in to make this an entirely believable future. The production of this film is completely unique. Many other films have mimicked advertisment campaigns of today in the future, but probably not as much as this film. Also, the Lexus that is shown, is completely believable, and it makes you wonder if they actually hired the folk down there to design a future car just for this film.

    The Acting

As stated earlier, I have forgiven Tom Cruise for Mi:2 and Vanilly Sky. He proves that he is actually capable of portraying a believable and likable character, as his John Anderton here. This hasn’t happened in other films lately, but we don’t want Cruise’s character to die (think Vanilla Sky). Solid performance by Cruise, though may not be Oscar worthy, but then again, along with other people, I hope Oscar melts…

Colin Farrell. People didn’t believe me when I said that this guy can act. Even after American Outlaws and Hart’s War, and not to mention Tigerland. Once seeing Farrell in Minority Report, there is no question that he will have a long and successful career. Oh, and Lunchbox and I were counting "prick points" for his character, and he received about 20…you figure out why.

Max Von Sydow delivers a great role as Director Burgess; though not the creator of PreCrime, still cares alot about its survival, and this is clearly evident. Thumbs up.

    The Beautiful Story

I don’t want to ruin anything for you, but let me just say, this story is thought out too perfectly. There is one scene in a mall, which involves umbrellas. Through the idea for what happens is not the hardest thing to come up with, is still quite possibly the most convenient thing to ever happen on film.

    ILM (the SFX)

I can keep watching the parts with Anderton skillfully shuffling through the images created by the PreCogs a thousand times, and not get bored. Cruise gets the motions across perfectly, and creates it into an artform all in itself.

As for the object effects: wow. The ships in the film, through very reminiscent of the copter from A.I. have never looked more real on screen.

    Camera Work

Inventive and interesting. Many shots were just wow. There is one shot, where Cruise is talking to a PreCog, and she is trying to stop him from doing something which I loved. It is setup so that they are in a hug, and speaking to each other without actually facing each other or talking into the ear. It’s quite hard to explain, but once you see this film, you will know which one I am talking about. Speilberg knows how to push and make us see exactly what he wants us to see. I’m a fan of good camera in a film, because if it’s boring, it will detract from the overall influence of the story. In this case, I didn’t have to worry about it once.

Also, Speilberg spent ALOT of time on footage for the images which the PreCogs are supposed to produce, and this is easily noticable. I also liked it when Anderton looks at one image, and it being completely useless, he just shoves it aside. Sure, no one in PreCrime had to think twice about it, but it still had to be planned out by the crew.

    Bottom Line

If the system is perfect, then this film is perfect.

Wow!! I only hope somebody makes a video game out of this one!!

  3. faikoq

I walked out in the middle, not my type of movie

  4. kjenny

Mr. Spielberg, you’ve screwed up big time
Leave the sci-fi alone! I consider "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "A.I. Artificial Intelligence," and "Minority Report" to be three of your worst films. Stick to the likes of "Jaws" and "Jurassic Park" or "Schindler’s List" and "Saving Private Ryan." This latest feature of yours has plot holes big enough to drive a diesel truck through. I can’t even begin to go into all of the areas where a discrepancy in the narrative arises. You’re still my favorite director of all time and I worship you like a god, but please, Please, PLEASE don’t do anymore "futuristic" movies. I’m begging you.

  5. bbju

    Not as good as expected
I liked the movie - mostly the concept - but I was a bit disappointed.

  6. rtmyvv

interesting movie with some great action scenes
The movie has holes in it, and the storyline drags on a bit. but it looks into the future and is a fun movie. there are stressful scenes dealing with serious issues. i enjoyed watching tom cruise, where i once did not because he was too cocky. colin farrell is also very cute in this.

  7. colee

    Good sci-fi movie.

  8. skyboy

Well made, but not as smart as it should be
Minority Report is definitely a well made movie. Spielberg has reached a certain level of near perfection in his ability to capture dreamy future landscapes.

And at first glance the concepts that the movie presents are twisted and inviting….although the credit for that has to go to Philip K Dick. Although Speilberg does a credible job of presenting Dick’s paradoxes about predetermination, he manages to smooth out the rough edges and tie everything up in a neat little way that sells his subject matter a bit short.

Don’t get me wrong: it’s a good movie. I liked it. But Spielberg’s obsession with teary eyed I-love-you-no-I-love-YOU moments and happy endings softens the serious blow to your brain that this movie should have been.

Don’t say it’s a Blade Runner. Ridley Scott would have made this movie way harder. Just go into it expecting to be thoroughly entertained, but not necessarily challenged, and you’ll be fine.

  9. baikie

    A fun ride from Spielberg…
This is slightly better than Spielberg’s usual output, with a polished visual style and some interesting themes. Good scifi.

  10. and85

    Actually pretty good
    Plot: 2
    Originality: 9
    Visuals: 7
    Acting: 7

    Overall: 6.25

  11. tim47

    Wait for the video
    This movie is highly overrated.
It was a good "Disney" movie, the scary trees, the eyeball operation etc. Very predictable, Tom Cruise can do a lot better than this. Definitely wait for the video.

  12. gefily

A mind-bending, action-adventure thrill ride in the tradition of ‘Blade Runner’.

  13. ded7

well paced, and exceptional special effects

  14. bora

    i liked Agatha the best
the scenes involving the pre-cog, Agatha, with the umbrella, the coins, and the balloons, was the best part of this movie…i could take or leave the rest. i gave it 7 because Steven Spielberg, is still a great director.

  15. keqliv

    Love SciFi!
Good story by an author I like very much. Well paced action sequences kept me interested but Tom Cruise is still not much more than a pretty face and why does Spielberg always wind up with a sappy, predictable ending?

  16. domer

    Truely amazing Sci-Fi Murder Mystery
Stunning. Spielberg has done it again. The movie keeps you on edge right through leaving you to guess until the end. Loses only one mark due to a small plot hole. But other than that, a must see movie.

  17. bpelvz

Special effects blow your mind away from the loopholes in the script.

  18. opps

Excellent! Great suspense and action all the way through.

  19. tai102

    script problems sink the film.

  20. harold

Excellent - action and makes you think

Went in expecting a lot, wasn’t disappointed.
While this movie certainly won’t win a spot in my DVD collection (That’s not saying much, really…), I was still surprisingly entertained by this movie.

The plot was just convoluted enough to keep me guessing without trying to be overly deep although some of the characters were pretty obvious.

Yet another great and funny supporting role for Lev, my favorite Russian cosmonaut from Armageddon. His "lovely" assistant helping herself to a doped up Tom Cruise elicited appropriate responses and then when he went blindly looking for his food and drink…

Perhaps I’ll consider buying it. All signs still point to "no," but if there’s room in my DVD collection for cheesy Sonny Chiba martial arts movies, then maybe there’s room for Tom Cruise.

What exactly was the point of the wooden balls anyway? Sure the grain makes them unique, but, SO WHAT… No explanation there. I can theorize why this may be significant, but that’s only what it would mean to ME, not what it means to the characters in the movie.

Anybody with any background in a technical field where access is critical would know that such an oversight would be grossly negligent and heads would roll.

I enjoyed the movie a lot myself but perhaps I’m becoming jaded but I couldn’t see to score the movie higher than a 7 partially because of the poor treatment of technical matters. Using his old eyeballs to gain access? Assuming that his eyeballs hadn’t clouded over just being carried around into a plastic baggie and assuming that the biometrics would have been "smart" enough to even be able to read those things, the whole building would practically have gone into lockdown once a wanted suspect attempted to gain access to what is supposed to be one of the most secure areas of the building, old age looks notwithstanding.

Anyway the plot was otherwise pretty solid and consistent with the general principles of precognition. It brought up the interesting moral dilemmas regarding intent and forewarning. But with its gross errors regarding security… I am more apt to be generous to a film when its intent is to be surrealistic or superhero fantastic or just plain cheesy entertainment. This movie, however, tried to take itself very seriously and that’s what ultimately made itself more susceptible to criticism.

Aside from that it was good to see that guy who played Jesse James in that outlaw movie a while back (American Outlaws, I think. I gave it a positive review if I recall) back on film.

Hmmm.. maybe I should have written this as part of my review instead… Cut… Paste…

  22. trifel

A movie that evokes emotions and makes you think.

  23. thimm

Wow, this was a Steven Spielberg film?

  24. jel

    Extremely immersive…
I was totally immersed through the entire movie. "Minority Report" provoked quite a few reactions out of me…I found myself giggling, awestruck, and saddened at times. In fact, I felt like I was reacting more than the rest of the audience?! Usually it’s the other way around!

The acting in this movie was good, but that is not what I came out of the theater thinking about… I was thinking about "the future". So for me at least, the story and special effects overshadowed everything else. In addition, I have always felt that Tom Cruise makes every role look smooth. So smooth, that it’s easy to overlook what a fantastic job he does.

My only gripe was that I wanted an unhappy / unconventional ending. This movie could have went the other direction in the end, and still been a big ticket blockbuster.

  25. roof8

    awesome

  26. andy

    very very good movie
i really liked this movie. there wasn’t much that bugged me really. there are some holes in it, such as, the changes made in 50 years is a bit too much (maybe if they made it 500 years), but that’s me just looking for something to bitch about. it’s just a solid movie.

    go see it.

    now.

  27. serik

    A solid Sci-Fi flix

  28. bonch

    See Cron’s review. And . . .
an indication of a thought provoking flick is when you and your friends talk about it for the next couple hours. Such was the case here.

And the strongest scene I have seen in a long time, i.e., the most viscerally impactful, was the refrigerator scene. Wow. I literally had to avert my eyes and it wasn’t about sex, violence, drug use or anything like that. Great job, Mr. Spielberg.

  29. pin

LIKE MATRIX, TWICE SEEN TILL I FULLY UNDERSTOOD IT, AND LOVED IT

  30. zaobao

More than I expected, Intensity level was 10, story 10, acting 7
I think I’m still coming down from this one. I saw it both Saturday (with my sons) and Sunday (with my wife) and all of us agree that it was probably one of the best Spielberg movies we’ve ever seen.

I don’t know who the girl was that played one of the "pre-cog’s" but she did a great job. Had the acting been a little stronger I would have given this a 10.

I’m watching to see what that idiot reelerguy says.

  31. kenney

Intense Thriller that just happens to be SciFi
Cruise was phenomenal, not once did he overplay his role, okay maybe a couple of times but he was still excellent.

The story line and plot were so convoluted and surprising that it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire movie. The sfx were awesome (of course) and if the fight scenes were just a little better this would have been a 10 in my book.

  32. vibeke

    MR - no Blade Runner
I saw this movie on the big screen on IMAX. Alltogether, this was a well-executed, taught, engaging hollywood production. From the perspective of pure entertainment, it succeeded as a high concept, high budget episode of Columbo, if you will. There are some truly heartbreakingly haunting sequences that are vintage Spielburg genius.

But Spielberg, have been burned from a box office point of view from AI, seems to have been reluctant to take any real risks. The movie failed to rise above your standard sci-fi thriller genre and claim any new sensibilities as Blade Runner did.

  33. Wilton

Very intense… I felt like I needed to be "decompressed" after this one!

  34. zemcap

This movie was so cool! I loved it. Tom Cruise was a great futuristic cop. He Did some really cool stunts. This movie will put Speilberg back on the A-list, after he bombed A.I. That was a Kubrickian masterpiece that shouldn’t have been tampered with (last 35 minutes). I went in expecting the movie to be all nice and happy, like the end of A.I, but I was wrong. He knows how to make a cool futuristic movie, and make it well.

  35. it-art

If you like SCI_FI this will please you immensly, great flick.

  36. cindys

Tight story, tight immersion, tight visual look.
