A Jewish male nurse (Ben Stiller) plans to ask his live-in girl friend (Teri Polo) to marry him. However, he learns that her strict father (Robert DeNiro) expects to be asked for his daughter's hand before she can accept. Thus begins the visit from Hell as the two travel to meet Mom (Blythe Danner) and Dad, who turns out to be former CIA with a lie detector in the basement. Coincidentally, a sister (Nicole DeHuff) also has announced her wedding to a young doctor (Thomas McCarthy). Of course everything that can go wrong, does, including the disappearance of Dad's beloved Himalayan cat, Jinxie.Actors

A good comedy, a little too sitcom-ish in nature. I’d hate to see it again.
The only reason this film is worth seeing it, is De Niro!
Nothing funny at all
DeNiro is the only one that’s funny in this one
Average Hollywood fare

De Niro as a ‘normal’ guy; very funny
Very funny with great performances.
I fell asleep
It’s only okay. The first time I saw it I thought it was funny, but once you’ve seen it, you don’t need to see it again.
I enjoyed the cast, and I think it was worth a laugh, but don’t expect it to win any awards.
pretty funny stuff Stiller is good here
funny and a bit touching
Not hilarious - but funny.
Absolutely pathetic… predictable, lame, beyond belief
De Niro and Stiller do a good job, but the movie is much too predictable.
this movie was easy to relate to but slow
Robert DeNiro does a great job, but the rest is only decent
Hilarious
Did you bust a gut watching The Klumps? Were you rolling in the aisles while watching Scary Movie? Are you frothing at the mouth to get your hands on the Road Trip DVD? Then please, for the good of filmmaking, see Meet the Parents. In a year where the grotesque minds of writers and directors have come into deep questioning, Meet the Parents provides an almost old-school like trip to the movies.
This movie should not be doing so well at the box office. Looking at the popular comedies over the past few years, gross-out has become the new standard. Comedic directors continually push the line back further and further. And then Jay Roach comes along with the sweet, simple, and most importantly, hilarious Meet the Parents.
Roach, as you may or may not know, directed both Austin Powers films. He is well-known for his leniency with improvisation, and I’ll be the first to pony up and admit that I credit Mike Myers with the comedic genius present in the Powers flicks. Meet the Parents, however, provides a strong case for Roach’s probable stature as the best comedic director in the business. While many people will say that There’s Something About Mary is their favorite comedy of the past few years, the Farrelly brothers haven’t done much else. Outside Providence was a dud, and Me, Myself and Irene was very poor considering it was starring the best comedy star of the 90s, Jim Carrey.
Roach presents a very simple story. There’s not much thinking in it. Guy loves girl. Guy meets girl’s parents. Girl’s dad is nuts. Comedy ensues. Had Roach put in Three Stooges-like sound effects, it would probably have enhanced the flow. EVERYTHING goes wrong for Greg Focker, who is played by Ben Stiller. Stiller also presents a strong case to be considered the best comedic actor in the business. With Carrey going dramatic, and Sandler widdling away in dumbness, Stiller manages to pick great, funny roles, ranging from the gross-out Mary to the super-hero spoof Mystery Men. Stiller has the boyish nervousness that many people (including myself) can relate to, and laugh at as well. And when the situation calls for it, his anger is laughable. Stiller has that small smirk that just hints at what is to come. Whether being lectured in a dressing room, or yelling at a hidden camera, Stiller runs the range of emotions without looking like an idiot.
Anyone who questioned Robert De Niro’s comic abilities can sleep easy after seeing Meet the Parents. While Analyze This was a solid comedy, De Niro mainly got laughs over his self-mockery. De Niro is always seen as the tough-talking Italian, and he played that role to perfection in Analyze This. In Meet the Parents, however, he fleshes out and works off a hilarious script from John Hamburg and Jim Herzfeld. De Niro’s icy glare is perfect for his father-in-law image. It doesn’t seem that hokey, which is something that could have been easily over-played.
Meet the Parents is simply hilarious, and while that is what many people will get from the film, it also has a very "home sweet home" attitude. For all of the wild events, the film is not malicious. It almost feels like you are sitting with the Byrnes family for Thanksgiving dinner as they recount these hilarious occurrences.
My first exposure to Owen Wilson was in Armageddon. He was a funny bit player, but I wasn’t too keen on his elasticity after seeing him play the same exact role in The Haunting. In Meet the Parents, though, he plays Kevin, Pam’s (Teri Polo) old fiance. He doesn’t have top billing, and his character isn’t big, but he provides another funny dimension to the film. He has a similar approach to comedy as Stiller does, and he is just as likable. For a character that could have been easily vengeful, Wilson plays him lightly which just adds to Meet the Parents’s light, homey feel.
Meet the Parents ends with the perfect set-up to a sequel, just as Roach’s Powers films did. And considering Roach’s talent, both his own and his cast’s, the impending sequel will not only be welcomed with open arms, but it may be equally as funny.
Funny enough to see once. It’s a farce, played like a drama. The humor is moderated by the pain and embarassment. Afterwards, I realized there wasn’t any nudity or obscenity, and the "adult" themes were integral to the plot. That was worth an extra point.
It’s OK. Nothing more, just OK.
Very funny, although …
This was a funny movie with a funny premise. Bring the Boyfriend home to the overprotective former CIA Daddy.
I (along with the 3 people I went with) laughed nearly all the way through. Although after awhile even I (not just the CIA Daddy) was getting a little sick of Stiller’s shenanigans. That part started to get a little overdone.
With that said, the movie still finishes out really well and is good fun entertainment.
Vintage Ben Stiller
If you like Stiller, then you will love this movie. Filled with physical comedy and a healthy dose of lowbrow humor, Ben Stiller is the funniest I have seen him in a long time. The situations that he got himself into were painful to watch, but great comedy! I would see this movie again, because I know I missed some of the humor the first time while I was laughing so hard. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie!
Very funny! Dinero and Stiller are hilarious together!
Most of the funny scenes were in the previews, can probably wait for video.
very funny
By far the most hilarious movie made this year.
Robert Deniro and Ben Stiller steal the show in Meet the Parents. Its a movie where you will keep thinking it can’t get worse…but it sure as hell does. This is a movie YOU MUST SEE.
No need to see this in the theatres…
Wait for video. Jokes were spread apart nicely, so there are chuckles and light laughs throughout.
Not as good as all the hype says…..
funny but not REAL FUNNY
Robert DeNiro is great as the over-protective father and Ben Stiller is funny as the boyfriend of his daughter. It never gets really hilarious but it is consistently funny.
pretty funny stuff, once again, Robert DiNiro displays his endless versatility
very funny movie here folks. you must see this thing.
we’ve all had that one point in time where one little thing goes wrong, and the more you fight to make it right, the worse it gets. "Meet the Parents" nails this perfectly.
you must see this movie. just don’t drink that big pop that movies sell for the ever low price of $3.25 +tax. you might have to go pee half way through the movie and i don’t want you to miss any of it, nor do i want you to pee yourself laughing.
with that, i must go.
this film deserves a much better write up than this drivel i’ve put out here, but it’s cold and rainy and i have to find that damn cat. he’s out there without food, shelter and a potty.
we can’t have that.
hilarious. i love this movie
