Storyline
Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of "robotophobic" Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner's (Smith) investigation into the murder of Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), who works at U.S. Robotics, in which a robot, Sonny (Tudyk), appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Three Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because.. if robots can break those laws, there's nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin (Moynahan), who specializes in the psyches of robots.

    More of Sonny the robot…
…was needed in this loose adaptation of Asimov’s robot stories. I liked Sonny. I liked the actor that voiced Sonny. I liked that the robots "look" wasn’t too detailed. I like Will Smith. I didn’t like the lines the script gave his character, that is-the wise-cracking cop. This type is beginning to get a bit long in the tooth and the character was too firmly rooted in 2004 instead of 2035. The jokes were ok but kind of predictable and a bit lame. I wonder how many young film goers even heard of Harold Lloyd (the silent screen great comic) and I’m can’t imagine the uptight Doctor that Bridget Moynahan was playing would have a clue as to this reference. If that was supposed to be Det. Spooner’s idea of a joke it was really lame. There is plenty of action and a few twists along the way and the ending scenes with just Sonny and the other robots was the right way to end the movie. I was only a little bit disappointed. It’s definitely worth seeing. More of Sonny and less of Det. Del Spooner’s tired wise-cracks would have made me give it a solid "8".
