It was one of the most terrible movies that I have ever seen!
Basically, I expected the movie "Gangs of New York" very much because I like the director Martin Scorsese and the main actor Leonardo Dicaprio. I was fascinated with Leonardo Dicaprio after watching "Titanic" and "Catch me if you can." However, I couldn’t say anything in astonishment after watching the film. In a word, I was shocked. I can’t understand why this movie is a work of a great labor of Martin Scorsese.
It’s a movie with the Civil War as its setting. The main event is a struggle for leadership between the natives who built America and the Irish who immigrated into America owing to a famine in Ireland. The struggle is a war between Protestant and Catholic, too.
By the way, both of them don’t use the gun. Although no war can be graceful, their way of fighting is too cruel. They killed each other as if to butcher a pig. What is worse, the leader of Catholic is a priest. They pray to God for help before the battle. They seemed to regard the bloodbath as a holy war like the "jihād" of Islam. Moreover, the whole city was thrown into complete chaos. When a fire breaks out in a building, people don’t try to put out the fire. Instead, they are busy stealing. In short, the society is full of evil.
Even the mere thought of the move makes me shudder. I hope nobody will watch this movie. This is not good for mental health.

Why the nudity and graphic violence?
The amount of nudity, sex and almost tasteless violence is probably characteristic of the style that is Scorsese, but in the context of this movie, it was quite unnecessary and did little for the movie. On the contrary, the amount of excess visuals eventually killed this film. It’s quite obvious that neither the director nor the script could carry the movie so the director resorted to sex and violence to make the film watchable. Film makers should have more respect for their audience.

Epic, but a little too long for me. Day-Lewis great. Leo alright. Diaz quite bad

    Outstanding is an understatement!

    gangs shmangs
i thought it was suppossed to be an epic movie, but i thought that it was a bit dull. i don’t know why, but i didn’t really like it. i just thought it dragged on and on, and. . . on? leo was alright. everyone says daniel day lewis was fantastic, but whatever.

i don’t know what all the hype was about, really. honestely, i was happy when the movie was over.

go see catch me if you can. a better leo movie!

    Daniel yes, Leonardo no
Great historical piece, great direction, great script, and great production design.

Daniel Day-Lewis is outstanding (even with the DeNiro vocal tone and cadence that pops in here and there).

Leonardo was most likely picked for his star power abroad.

Cameron Diaz does quite well and should be considered for other dramatic roles.

The music at the start of the film was poorly selected. The modern composition does not fit with this period piece.

    Overambitious, Lacks Coherency
It’s an interesting film, but has too many flaws for it to come across as one of the greats. Mainly, I think the film suffers with the addition of the draft war element. Sorcese goes to great lengths building up the revenge plot, and when Amsterdam and Bill the butcher are about to FINALLY spar, it’s a major let down because the fight is paralleled with the draft riots apparently occurring at the same time. Also, I found Leo’s depiction of Amsterdam very disappointing. I think Leo’s talented (go see Catch Me if You Can, for example), but he was way over his head with this character. And his attempt at an Irish accent was inconsistent at best. Daniel Day Lewis carried the film; he’s downright scary in his portrayal of Bill. Too bad Liam Neesan couldn’t stick around longer to play with DDL–that would have been worth seeing. I won’t even go into how this film was more than likely BUTCHERED in the year+ time it spent in post-production. In CONCLUSION, the film has some nice imagery and ideas, but it’s overambitious and unfortunately suffers from a lack of storytelling clarity.

Scorsese doesn’t have much left to say about violence but he’s still obsessed

    I didn’t like it
REALLY predictable, senseless gore and just not a story that I neither have nor will ever be interested in. Immigrants fighting each other in the mid 1800’s? who cares

Definitely one of the most audacious films of all time; a perfect 10!
