    Pretty good for a cartoon…

Fans of CG will get their money’s worth. But probably only them.

  3. pilot

Just loved it. Ending confusing though

  4. nkhan

Realistic doesn’t mean it looks good

  5. aphid

    pretty, but boring.

The technical achievements alone give this film any merit.
No, the movie didn’t suck, but honestly it wasn’t any better than similar films that have been made with live actors. And if you approach it on that basis, the movie is at best a bit above average.

I will however grant it an extra "point" on its technical level. I guess I can afford to be generous at 6:30 in the morning.

  7. watt

    Actually it IS pretty good

Marvelous CGI animation, terrific story-line makes Final Fantasy come to life!

  9. amelia

Great special effects, story and characters need more development.
Good Science fiction, the story and characters need some developing. I have watched this movie several times and will probably watch it many more. The "acting" was very poor, but then again maybe that can be a good thing. Sometimes the actor is the premise for the film. Final Fantasy is a "must-see" for hardcore sci-fi fans.

a good start for CG films. next time get a proper company to do it

  11. manalo

technically it was awesome but i’d like to see more facial expresions

As everybody else has said, amazing CGI.
Over here in the UK I have a Cinema pass, so I guess I’m less affected by the cost of going to the movies. Its just the time that gets wasted.

Saying that though, I quite enjoyed the movie. Ok the story line wasn’t the best, and the little brats in the back were annoying. But overall worth seeing, if only for the CGI.

A very bad movie hiding behind the cool animation
If the animation for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within wasn’t as great as it was, people would trash this movie and forget about it the next day. I agree with everyone else that the graphics are something, but this is a bad movie great graphics or not.

    Movie buff = 5 rating : Computer buff + movie buff = 8

Obviously awesome graphics, interesting story line

I am using Christmas presents to describe my thoughts on this film "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within". It was all wrapping but no box. This film had some amazing visuals. The photo-realistic humans were amazing and the phantoms were cool. I loved this films opening sequence. This is the highlight of the film. I loved those spaceships and soldier suits. But after that the film went down hill with a bunch of mumbo jumbo. All the spirit stuff was hackneyed and dumb. The main character Aki Ross was dumb. her soldier boy boyfriend was flat too. Steve Buscemi little funny guy rocked and he deserves his whole movie. The ending was horrible. This was a dumb and confusing ending. Another thing I noticed was these cgi humans did not seem like humans. Every step was measured and slow. These people have killer phantoms following them and they walk slow? And they never scratched their heads or rubbed their eyes. They did not have human mannerisms. This film is not worth your cash!

Definitely NOT worth the $17+ we paid to see this movie
To repeat the mantra, the graphics were good, but the script was poorly written, (and that’s being kind). The potential for meaningful messages at several different levels was there… but never realized. Beyond that, I hate it when I leave the theater saying, "That didn’t make sense."

The emotional animation was also not there, but that could have been overlooked, if the details of the story had been developed properly.

It just occurs to me, that the writers seemed to be stuck in a sort of "comic book writing" mentality, while the animators were trying to convince us that what we were seeing, was real…

    The result was just annoying.

They should try running it with the sound off.

Agree, If you enjoy video games, are into CG or anime - then see the movie.
As an animated film, this movie is ground breaking, and for that it scores extra points from me. I did not go see the movie for the story line, and nor should you. Most of us who have seen it went to see it because its the first main stream animated film to attempt human realism. Personally, in that regard, it delivered more than I had expected. Visually, it really was amazing. Too bad that alone cannot carry a film.

I also credit the film-makers for attempting real true human emotion. It would have been easy to shy away from such scenes, but they did not. There is a scene where two of the main characters subtly delve into their emotions for each other; leading up to an on-screen…. The emotions on their faces were true to form, and I bought into it.

Yes, the story is a bit slow, odd and confusing. I imagine that when you do a CG film, the script/storyline is more important that in non-animated films. After all, you cannot really shoot a scene over and over again, directing the actors and actresses. They went down a path, and there was no going back.

This was an ambitious film. I am sure they ran into many problems during the production cycle, but after 5 some odd years - they finished, and delivered a movie thats a first for its kind. Credit them for that.

If you work anywhere near the field of computer graphics, then see this movie.
My score is an average of 2 things.

First, the overall CG quality in this movie is the best I’ve every seen. Sure they are some things you can pick holes in, enveloping here, lack of facial expression there. There are times were you forget the movie is CG. My technical score is 9.5.

Second, the story and characters were flat and often dull. It was a standard story we’ve all seen before. Once it becomes easy to generate photo-realist people, the questions becomes do you want too? My score for this part of the movie is 5.

  20. yallop

Technically… jaw dropping, but the story is "the same old"
What can I say, the amount of work that has gone into this is unreal. Yeah, yeah, Toy Story was the first totally CGi "milestone"…but this goes to the next level. Anyone who has worked in this area knows how difficult it is to create a realistic characater…let alone,"photo" realistic. The environments they interact with and the designs were beautiful…original vehicles and weapons…and great costume deisgn.

Of course its not perfect..do remember, its first generation, but some of the texturing, animation and lighting was sublime…and a definite leap in technology.

The story stops it being a "killer" film (in the conventional sense), but its obviously aimed at a teen audience, and I guess it works.

Hats off to you guys…you have pushed the envelope, I can’t wait to see what comes next

    No explaining this one…
I’m just as curious about this story as most other people seem to be - what the heck was that about? Maybe it’ll be better understood, or understood at all, in Japan.

The voice actors did a horrible job; and that’s not fair - they were tasked with voice acting mostly emotionless faces. Square took everything to the next level EXCEPT emotional and facial expression; obviously this is tough technically. So, I give the actors some credit - I mean Sutherland was the only one half-way decent, and even it didn’t click.

Tips for a next time: write the script, hire the actors, act it completely out, and THEN do the animation to match. I feel the voice actors were too limited in their timing and emotions.

The graphics, of course, were amazing, and the only reason this movie’s getting a 6 out of me. That’s right, my rating is COMPLETELY based on the technical merits of this "movie".

  22. Mason

They should have left the "Final Fantasy" off of the title.
Hmm… Well, apart from my summary statement (which I will get to later),
I thought it was a pretty good movie. I mean, there were some things I didn’t (and don’t) understand. The plot is pretty cerebral, and probably too much so for a lot of people. It’s a little slow in some parts, but I personally don’t mind slow movies. Some things didn’t make sense, but that may be remedied by watching it again a couple of times, which I may do.

The graphics are excellent, and that goes without saying. Absolutely amazing.
You forget that it is CG some of the time. Especially the mountains at the end. Wow. The faces, the consoles, the ships, physics: all great. There are some arm motions that still aren’t correctly captured, but this is a minor thing. There are also some errors with voice syncing and mouth movements, but again, minor details.

If it was just up to it being a regular old movie like it should have been, I would give it an 8. But… like the summary states:

They should have left the "Final Fantasy" off of the title.
There is almost nothing to bond the movie to the game series.

<MANY OF THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS MAY BE LOST TO YOU WHO HAVEN’T PLAYED THE GAME>

They made the planet actual Earth. Big no no. All the games have been "Terra", "Gaia", or some other planet name that could have been anywhere, any time, any dimension. This is part of the fantasy. Making it on Earth, in a certain location, totally ruins this element of it. It is not even possibly set in a paralell universe; it’s just boring old Earth after some shadow dudes got to it.

Where are the chocobos? They have been a big part in every game after FF3(?) except for FF8.
Where is the Final Fantasy theme music? This has been in the majority of games, and would have definately tied the movie in better. Maybe they thought the music wouldn’t fit in? Did you ever see Casablanca? There were tons of variations to "Remember This". It could have worked with the FF theme music.

Where are the swords? Even in FF 7 and 8, where there were guns, there still were swords. There is always swords!

Where is "Cid"? Granted, there is a scientist guy named "Sid". But, geez… do ya think they could have maybe changed the "S" to a "C"? Where are Biggs and Wedge?

To their credit, Square made the crisis involve Gaia, like the game counterparts. But, unlike the games, there is no "final boss" or big confrontation with the "bad guy". There isn’t even a "bad guy" to fight against, except for the General, and he is just a pain. He’s not the big bad guy.

Basically, there’s a lot of angst flowing from those of us who are fans of Final Fantasy. This did no justice to the game at all. RRRrrr…

If they had left the "Final Fantasy" off the title, there would have been very few people, if any, would have found connections between it and the game series.

Amazing graphics, but would you see this movie if the people weren’t CG?
It’s hard to give FF a low score, just based simply on the amazing achievement of the visuals. Special effects, design, color, vision — they’re all spectacular. And of course the CG characters are the most realistic looking computer-generated humans ever. Ever.

FF stands as a milestone in the history of computer graphics. But while they may be incredible technical achievements, the characters are ultimately as flat as the story.

It makes you wonder — other than the kudos you get for pulling it off technically, why would you ever use CG characters instead of real humans? The best they can ever aspire to be is as good as the real thing.

  24. katsup

Tony says "Did the computer generate the script too?"
Ok flick, the CG is amazing, the voice acting is strong, the script is a stemaing pile of dog feces, and the rest is movie magic.

    Plusses- CG FX…ummm…yeah thats it..

Minussus- The main characters (full CG) did nothing to justify they were CG. Why recreate life when live things do it better. If you want a good CG flick stick with Toy Story or Monsters Inc.

Tony says "Go see it, try to ingore the lack of immersion, ignore the lip synch, and remember, as Dr. Sid says, ‘It’s Warm!’" .

  25. cangoo

Square should stick to games and cut-scenes.
I’m sorry to be the first to say it, but this movie is crap!
If you go see it for nice CG then you’ll like it though because thats all it is: A 90-or-whatever minute tech-demo. It sure does look good - textures, scenery and lighting is great. We’ve all seen the closeups of faces - and most of them are real good - not all though. Oh and the lipsyncing is pretty bad as well as the teeth and tongue’s being disconcerting too.
The story sucks ASS though. It makes no sense at all! The acting (voice-acting I guess) is so bad I was cringing most of the time. NO emotions at all! And they walk too slow all the time - like "Oh … the … monsters … are … coming … … … maybe … we … should" and so forth. They even try some humor - but that just TOTALLY falls through!
Bottom line: Great CG. Horrible movie!

  26. carlo

ok. story sucks bad, but it’s still amazing
this movie was just amazing. while there were very small things here and there that you could see that told you it wasn’t real, you had to be damn picky.

there were places where i forgot that it wasn’t real. and for that i give it the 7.

if it wasn’t for the technology behind it, i’d prolly give it a 3. like i said, the story sucked. i could crochet a story with fewer holes.

there are visuals in the movie though that still have me in awe. if you can’t find it in a cheap theatre, watch it on a damn good tv.
