Storyline
Set in the Los Angeles Police Department in April 1992, Dark Blue is a dramatic thriller that takes place just days before the acquittal of four white officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King and the subsequent L.A. riots. In this racially-charged climate, the LAPD's elite Special Investigations Squad (SIS) is assigned a high-profile quadruple homicide. As they work the case, veteran detective Eldon Perry, known for his tough street tactics and fiery temper, tutors SIS rookie Bobby Keough in the grim realities of police intimidation and corruption. Meanwhile, Assistant Chief Holland, the only man in the department willing to stand up to the SIS, threatens to end Perry's brand of singlehanded "justice" on the Los Angeles streets. While navigating through the tumultuous neighborhoods of South Central L.A., Perry and Keough must track down cold-blooded killers and face their own demons, which prove to be more ruthless than the criminals they pursue.

More to it than you would think.
Think Training Day. Training Day with a much better acting, more interesting dialogue, and overall better film.

Kurt Russell has given us the best performance so far in 2003. Almost every aspect of his character is believable, from his racial point-of-view to how he is living in his father’s footsteps to trying to do the right thing.

The idea of Dark Blue starts off in a similar fashion as Training Day, in that its an old cop showing a rookie the ropes in the business. What makes Dark Blue more interesting than Training Day is that it doesn’t linger on little scenes trying to build character. Dark Blue is able to build character while carrying on with important plot points. With all this time that it saves, a more interesting story can be told.

The only downside that I personally see in this movie is some of the music. It was too Lethal Weapon-ish…slow and unmoving jazz. The rest of the music though, fit perfectly. Though I am not a fan of rap, the music chosen for the downtown city scenes was very good.

An important thing to note is that though it may seem the trailer gives away most of the movie, it actually tells you about 1/3 to half of what happens in the film. There are a large amount of aspects that it focuses on, and a strong sense of believability is achieved.

I wouldn’t be quick to say that this is the best film of 2003 so far, but thinking back at the last two months, what else has there been? Nothing memorable comes to mind at all (not talking about the Christmas holiday season, which is considered 2002). If you liked Training Day, or in general like crime films, then Dark Blue is highly recommended.
