Storyline
1960, small town France. Vianne Rocher and her pre-teen daughter move into town and open a chocolate shop just as lent is beginning. The town's small-minded mayor can't accept this and does his best to shut her down, but her warm personality and incredible chocolates manage to win over many townsfolk. Things get shaken up even more when a group of river drifters, led by Roux, stop into town (to the even greater distress of the mayor) and Vianne takes up with him. Meanwhile, she's been helping Josephine out of her abusive marriage and her equally freethinking landlord, Amande Voisin, get together with her grandson, Luc, whose mother doesn't approve of Amande's ways.

    Acting at it’s most mediocre

  2. sonny

    A fairy tale for adults.

  3. benj1

Theme: Church goers are hatefull hypocrites…

  4. denzil

    Nothing special…
5 academy award nominations? You gotta be kidding me. Had a couple of interesting moments but there was nothing special, much like this review.

It was interesting to see Trinity in a role as a mother though. I never found her particularly attractive (and think that people who DO find her attractive to be completely out of their minds) and her hairdo made her look downright plain.

Good, but I thought it could be more interesting

    Choco-lot of crap
Why do they keep remaking Like Water for Chocolate?

  7. luigi

Outside of Binoche, this one’s pretty boring

  8. jrana

    had hoped for something more

i really enjoy feel-good movies. even when somewhat cliche.

  10. ffxyy

I loved it! Johnny Depp is way hot in this movie!

  11. picm17

A great, unique film but the addition of Johnny Depp to the cast put it down.

Slow? yes Action packed? No but great acting, good story, great scenery

Wow, this totally sucks. A chocolate store in France makes for a stupid movie.

Very pleasant, but my expectations were higher.
Everyone I knew raved about this movie. And it was a really good movie. Just not the knockout I was expecting.

  15. erm

Flat, there have been many way better dramas

  16. petit

This was a great movie… really enjoyed it!!

    I’m astounded..
Binoche is great. Dench might have been greater yet. This is perhaps the best balance I’ve seen in awhile of romance, comedy, and, well, I don’t know quite what to call it, stick-it-to-the-in-your-face-moral-preacher-types.

Only complaint is it needed a bit more pacing in the last third.

I liked this movie; it held my interest; Scenery8

    Mmmm…. Chocolate
So I probably would have never seen this movie on my own, but it turned out to be pretty good. It is definitely a date movie/chick flick with a few good laughs.

charming story, people we care about, clever plot.
I kept getting distracted, though, about how this woman got at least 13 separate wardrobe changes, including cloaks and shoes, as well as her mother’s ashes and all her household belongings, in one hand-carried duffel-bag.

A rather cloying movie, but the river rats added an interesting dimension and made the movie better than it otherwise would have been.

    beautifully crafted work of art
Lasse Hallstrom does it again with this beautiful story. (I loved The Cider House Rules, too!) Some movies seem flawless to me — no slow scenes, no sloppy acting, no awkward parts. This was definitely one of those movies.

I especially liked the realistic (or what seems realistic to me) French accents. I’m sure it’s hard for a director to decide whether to do subtitles or have actors speak in accents when a film is set in a country where they don’t normally speak English, but what they did with their voices in Chocolat worked for me. I guess anything is better than Rosanna Arquette in The Whole Nine Yards!

Tasty looking but too gooey and commercial on the inside.
This movie might have tasted sweet if it weren’t for the extra helping of commercialism. Alfred molina is great as the repressed count, but the movie is otherwise strictly for chocoholics.

  23. alban

Good movie! People that like John Woo movies might not like it though.
I went in not knowing what it was about and enjoyed watching it. Its just a simple movie with a good message.

  24. Margie

Not just a chick flick - the men will like it too.

    Good date movie…
