A classic movie back to life
The effects in the film feel a little dated, but the tension in the movie is quite palpable. Over the years I think the impact of the movie has waned somewhat but it’s still classic sci-fi horror and worth seeing on the big screen again after so many years.

Smith’s performance and Mann’s technichal wizardy can’t stop TKO
Here’s my problem with "Ali". The movie is more or less 3 films rolled into one without any real cohesiveness. Mann never seems to decide whether he wanted it to be an intriguing social comentary, a look at the life of one of the world’s greatest atheltes, or just a run of the mill sports film. The problem lies with the script and it’s eagerness to give only passing glances at these three subjects. The early look at Ali’s conversion to the Muslim faith was both poingant and fascinating. The subject and it’s affect in his life were pretty much non exisitent in the final half of the film. It’s a shame too, since it appeared that his faith seemed to be a motivating factor for a lot of his decisions. For the final act, the fimmakerd seemed content just to give you a peek at the very unlikable man that "the greatest" became. No amount of amazing fight sequences could save the rest of the film. Needless exposition was also a major drawback. The only true redeeming factor was Will Smith’s amazing performance. I admit that in the past, as much as I like "Big Willie" his acting has been less than impressive. Not so here.

    Horrible directing!
Did anyone else get sea sick at the beginning? The director did a terrible job. Three different timed suring the movie I had to look down to keep from getting sick. I was sitting in the fourth row, which could have contributed to it, but this was too much. Will Smith did a terrific job, and I thought the idea, and script were wonderful, the camera view could have used a little help.

    Rumble, Young Man, Rumble!
Last night, I saw a free, sneak peak of "Ali", which comes out on Christmas Day, and I have to say that I was really impressed with it overall.

This has been the second time out of all thirteen of his movies where his larger than life image took a back seat to the movie’s story even though he was the star of the film. I was not constantly telling myself, "Oh, that’s Will playing himself with a different name, ie. Men In Black." This was more of a "Six Degrees of Separation", in terms of his acting. He really loses himself in this role, and he plays it very well.

Michael Mann, who also did "The Insider", did a great job directing. Not only that, the cinematographer took some awesome shots. There was this one shot when Ali was in his car when he found out that Malcolm X had died. The camera slowly loses focus on his, and the building that was in the background came into focus. With this shot, you see Ali get emotional, beating the wheel of the car. When it comes back to focus on him he is in tears. You really had to see it for yourself. Another great thing about this movie is that the story flowed, which means the editing was top notch.

I would say more, but I’m going to be late for work.

Tonight, I have a free pass for Russell Crowe’s "A Beautiful Mind". I will let you know how it goes.
