Surprise! Actually a Little Better Than the Original
I couldn’t believe when I heard that Hollywood was remaking a cult classic- Tobe Hooper’s ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’. I am a firm believer that there are just some films that should not be remade- and I will admit that this was one of them.
Now I’d seen the original, and while in comparing the film to today’s standards of gore and scream fests, I wasn’t much of a fan- but I could see how this film could have paved the way for horror flicks of that period.
My problem with the original was that it started out great, but eventually bottomed out (anyone else recall the dinner table scene? What the hell was that about?). Unfortunately, that’s my problem with a lot of films today, too.
So how do you remake a cult classic? First, you take some of today’s more prominent young stars and cast them into the film- ie, Jonathan Tucker, Jessica Beil, and though he’s not young, he’s an oldie but goodie- R Lee Ermey, whom most of us remember as Drill Sergeant Hartman of ‘Full Metal Jacket’ fame.
Second, you revamp a lame script. Yes, I said lame- filmaking has evolved in script writing in the last thirty years.
This film does fall into the old habits of using the usual scare tactics when there is the occasional lull in the storyline- but it does keep people white-knuckling it throughout, which is always fun.
It’s good for a scare, and you may even enjoy the new script.
Takes the brilliant original and adds a bunch of stupid horror cliches
Not a straight remake. More like a retool.
There are several key plot elements of this new Texas Chainsaw Massacre that make it both better and worse than the original. Overall though I’d say this was a bit better. As for the major plot differences between the two movies, go watch both you lazy bum.
Jessica Biel is hot. No doubt about it. I’ll leave out the lascivious descriptions of her so as not to be totally blatant. Her character doesn’t completely suck either and while still a bit too "cowardly lead female" for my taste, her character wasn’t completely implausible. I prefer strong females over complete wimps and she was about in the middle of the road leading to courage.
In case anyone was wondering if this crime is really based on a true story, the answer is yes and no. There is nothing exactly as depicted by this movie, but the character of Bubba Leatherface was original patterned after real life madman Ed Gein.
Oops. typo. didn’t mean to give it a 6.
the oldi prob better but so close to beign better, better than n generation
