A 6 is higher (much higher) than movies of this sort.
Pretty funny, lots of cameos. I’ve never been much of a Eliza Dushku fan, but I’ll give her a few more points up after this film. Beeeyotch.
two of the cutest girls, lots of offbeat jokes, and eddie griffin in force.
Good underdog plotline. Glad I didn’t pay full price though.
slapstick yes but i liked the music kept me going, bettr than S.boys, N 6 others
A delightful suprise…
I know, I know, when I first saw previews for The New Guy I also thought it would be just "another teen movie". Zero plotline, jokes that leave the audience either clueless or in pain, and the stereotypical shallow high schoolers that seem to flock to our movie screens like flies to honey. But I was in for a delightful surprise.
DJ Qualls plays Gil Harris, AKA "Dizzy", who is the typical geek figure we’ve met a few of in our life time. Lead singer and bassist of a funk band, Dizzy has just started his senior year, only to be hit in the head with an well-aimed football and be blown off by the alpha female of the "popular crowd". After an embarrassing (and quite disturbing) incident in front of the whole school, Dizzy is placed in student counseling and (somewhat mysteriously) is put in jail (why? Does it really matter?) Luther, a strange convict of sorts, upon realizing Dizzy is the white version of him in high school, sets about to make him ruler of the playground. With a hilarious cast of con’s helping him out, our little guy is turned "from b**** to bull", with a new hairstyle, new clothes, and a new look (if you’ve seen the previews, then you know what I’m talking about). All Gil ("Dizzy"’s new identity) needs now is a new place to show off his stuff.
East Highland High School is Gil’s new domain, where he defies the school’s social ladder (a literal hill known as "the tower", with the "geeks" at the bottom and the "populars" at the top) and goes straight to the top, only to confront the school’s buff guy/top stud. Busting out all his moves, Gil is quickly accepted by Highland’s female population, with the typical few enemies along the way. Things look good for our loveable guy, when the unavoidable happens.
East Highland’s football team must play against Gil’s old high school, and that’s bound to start problems. Despite fears of being found out, Gil leads out the team, as is the norm, this time Braveheart-style. And of course, you’ll just have to see the movie to know the rest….
The New Guy is both comical and heart touching, if sloppily put together. A lot of the plot makes little since, but that doesn’t make this "coming-of-age" film any less worthy. I give The New Guy a 7 for the entertainment value it holds; the only things holding it back from a 9 would be the sometimes offensive humor littered across the film.
