The love scenes between Marky Mark and Michael Jackson were a little disturbing.
‘Planet Of The Apes’ is a great, summer movie. It rules!
Tim Burton’s films are sheer wonders!
I liked it
Bad, but it has a certain something
Plot: 1

Burton has done way better
You know, it was good until the end.
My older brother said, and I quote, "Why’d he leave the beautuful girl?"
shame shame shame
Stupid
Stupid, boring, terrible, unimaginative, lame, idiotic, confusing, weird, incoherent, rip off–all great adjectives that can be used to describe this non-remake remake of the original "Planet of the Apes." The "surprising" and "twisted" ending (I couldn’t say that any more sarcastically) just left the audience scratching its head, and all I could think was "What a waste of time. I want my money back!"
Finally saw the original and this one is crap compared to it.
typical. screw up a good thing. the original was much better
Huh?
The ending was confusing. I had to spend an hour trying to figure it out. Once I got it I was like, "Oh, okay!", but nobody should have to think about it that much. I though it should have ended like the original. The actors were good, and the directing was great. I was a little dissapointed.
I never saw the original. I hope it wasn’t as bad as this pile of crap.
Why does everyone love Tim Burton? All he does is disappoint, disappoint and disappoint. He’s got to be one of the most over-rated directors out there.
Good flick with great costumes and cinematography, lame ending
worthy of throwing your poop at
tim burton, the maker of such classic fair as pee wee’s big adventure and edward scissorhands, has shamed us all with this over budgetted, over rated remake of the cult film starring charleton heston and roddy mcdowell. along with ill fated astronaut mark wahlbergs performance, who delivers his lines with the gusto of a deviled ham, the movie crash lands into stupidity. its only saving grace is charleton heston, making a cameo appearance as a dying ape whose last words are, "Damn those humans! Damn them to hell!" Any film that can humiliate the head of NRA like that isn’t quite worthy of a "terrible" rating.
The disaster of the summer! Check out my review…
I thought it would have to be good to improve on a classic. Unfortunately it didn’t even come close.
The special effects were pretty good and the apes looked spot on - particularly when they were running on all-fours.
Tim Burston has added his unique touch to it and without him I think the film could have been much, much worse. His dark direction wasn’t really that evident in this film though.
So what made it so bad? The plot. The plot sucks - and it had the worst ending (the last 30-40 mins of the film was soooo cheesy). Obviously I can’t say what happened - I wouldn’t want to, uh, spoil it. But if you go see it, you’ll see exactly what I mean. The ending was completely geared for a sequel…I won’t bother watching that one.
i’ve seen worse and better, sequal, i don’t picture
By far the best summer blockbuster so far. Good acting, costumes, and style.
Tim Burton does it again… Atmosphere!!!
Well… i just got back from the movie theater, and the ending in this "POTA" is still more twisted, shocking and meaningful than the original. Acting is more real here, the makeup does not interfere with the actors and expressions. Is just amazing to see the actors trough the make up (they are just unrecognizable). The producers just got the best director that could make such a su-realistic atmosphere. The first one does not even dare to try to make a jungle for the monkeys (sorry… apes). The musical score gets an 8 from me, i love Danny Elfman, but this is not he’s best. Tim Roth is awesome, and the romantic side is more believable and could only be made in these days (monkey-man), back in the original days could be taken as sick, and perverted (gosh!). I prefer the way Burton tries to make us understand the hate between species with icons, actions, etc than just words as the original, i JUST DO!.
So… TIM BURTON… I LOVED IT! YOU? GO AND SEE IT WHILE YOU CAN…!!!
Good action-filled summer flick. Great-looking, too, with a fun ending.
I liked it! After some thought I even liked the ending.
I was a little leery about seeing this because it has gotten such widely varying reviews and such negative comments about the ending. I actually thought to myself, "well, if the whole movie is okay and the ending sucks at least I got to see a good movie". But I liked it, I enjoyed the fast pace, I enjoyed the makeup effects and, while at first I didn’t like the end, after more thought I enjoyed the twist it gave to the movie. Admittedly there really isn’t much of a plot and the acting isn’t really great (except Tim Roth, wasn’t that about scary how good he is at being a monkey, excuse me, APE?) …
The movie is good, it’s worth seeing because it’s fast paced exciting and it doesn’t shower you with profanity, nudity and sex like most hollywood fare.
Visually excellent but a bit corny
The more I think about it, the less I like it..what was with the ending?
I just couldn’t get into this movie for some reason. The "romance" was just LAME. It really was nill and seemed almost forced.
I didn’t get the ending (like most others I talk to) and I just spent the movie with the feeling that i had seen 100 other movies just like this one. I don’t understand. In the origional, i am told, the humans cannot talk and that makes him the natural leader. In this situation the humans are just as smart but are somehow submissive??? I mean would you or I just sit in a cage and ponder life while our "owner," who, by the way, still lives without electricity, sits around and does nothing? I really didn’t like that part.
HOWEVER, it really wasn’t BAD…it just wasn’t good!! If you are bored go see it!
Disappointingly bad.
Think about some of the talent they had going into this movie. And then throw away that talent on cheesy one liners that seemed poorly delivered.
The movie had none of the gritty "realness" that the trailer or movie posters promised. Instead the movie felt cobbled together without knowing whether to take itself seriously or not. I had high hopes for a good movie but instead it can be lumped in with just another Tomb Raider or Mummy Returns. Lots of flash but very little substance and nothing to give it any more staying power than a flash in the pan summer blockbuster.
It’s unfortunate because I really enjoyed the performances by Tim Roth and Michael Clark Duncan. And I will admit to liking Marky Mark. With Tim Burton directing and Danny Elfman scoring the movie, perhaps my mistake was hoping too much. This movie is an example of how good parts don’t make up a good whole. Nothing jives perfectly together and everything feels kind of scatterbrained, much like this review.
I should point out that I did see the original once many many moons ago so my recollection of it is sparse at best. In any case I didn’t find it that entertaining. I did prefer this movie’s ending, obviously giving it a chance at a sequel.
time does not improve some things
Aside from the ending it was good.
I actually like this version of the movie! Aside from a few of the monkies being kinda silly it worked out well. The ending was horrible though!
Good Movie
not bad, surprise!
i knew i had to see this film, i mean, how could one not? i just wasn’t expecting all that much, considering Mr. Burtons’ latest efforts. however i was pleasantly surprised. the sound was fantastic, the music, industrial sounds, was thrashing, the sets, of course, vintage Burton, totally incredible! what i really liked best, tho, was Helena Bonham Carter, she was wonderful. she was so good at imitating an ape, not that i know much about apes, but the noises she made when frightened, or angered, seemed pretty real. at any rate, she was super, to bad Mark Wahldberg didn’t follow suite. i just felt he left much to be desired, this film was just to big for him to carry. George Clooney, would have been a better choice, of course this is only my opinion. all that aside, i can recommend this movie, even the ending shows imagination.
Lacked the emotional impact of the first movie…
Although, the costumes and make-up deserve awards. What was up with the ending? I felt like I missed something huge… Come to find out, (after some online digging), that Burton thought it would be cute to leave you hanging like an "X-Files" episode, with explanations in a possible sequel. Stupid. He should have at least given us the courtesy of a "To be Continued…"
Why remake an already good movie if you’re going to make a worse one?
The original Planet of the Apes was not really what you’d call a "brainy" movie. But at least the script by Rod Serling succeeded in touching on some of the same kinds of interesting thought-problems that the Twilight Zone was famous for: What makes us human? What does it mean for one species to call itself "more evolved" than another?
And of course it had its famous — and incredibly satisfying — surprise ending.
No spoilers here — but I will say that in contrast, the surprise ending in Tim Burton’s remake is, like the rest of the movie, almost completely gratuitous and pointless.
Granted, the new Planet one-ups the original with some amazing special effects, in particular of course focusing on the realism and expressiveness of the apes themselves. But at what price? Just about everything good about the original story has been stripped away. The new script is simply foolish, with gaping plot holes, inexplicable characters, and gratuitous set-ups. And hell, the apes in the original movie actually looked pretty good already….and that was made decades ago.
Sure, the effects in Planet are pretty great. But let’s face it — doesn’t practically EVERY movie that comes out these days have amazing special effects?
The remarkable thing is that these days practically nobody even attempts to make a movie with good special effects and a story to match. I’m starting to get pretty bored with this formula.
Tony says "As Ape Lincoln said, in Bananas we Trust"
A feast for the eyes, Tim Burton once again takes us on joyus romp through the beautiful and absurd. Mark E. Mark shows us his good vibrations as he plays retro space man from beyond the stars. We get a look at some other cavemen style humans who happen to be the cleanest, most perfect, cavemen of all time. The apes are excellent. They are convincing evolutions of apes and do not look like costumed men. That is what makes this film worth seeing.
Plusses- The actors portayals of the ape men is flawless. The mix of CG with is is phenomial. The backgrounds are lush and Tim Burton’s style shows through in every frame. The story is good, and the twist works, even if it is a little silly.
Minussus- The underlying re-tell of the US’s slavery days, mixed with a bout of animal cruelty grow weary after the 1st 45 minutes. The cleanliness of the cave people is disturbing, and the 70’s style of the space program is bad.
Tony says "For the visuals alone this is a must see. If you are a nit picker and a reality lover, then pass."
Creepy make-up, great directing, awesome ending!
I just got home from Planet of the Apes, and man what can i say. It was the best movie i have seen so far this summer! The make-up is outstanding, the music fits the film excellently and the ending oh man the ending! Don’t worry i’m not going to tell you the end, i’m just going to tell you to GO SEE IT NOW!
I can’t believe all the other reviews people have written on this site! The highest rating is a 7/10?!? Well at least there is a 9 now to raise the average a bit! I have not seen the original POTA, and i am proud i haven’t because i probably would have gone to the movie expecting to see things from the original. Tim Burton has said repeatidly that it is a lot different than the original.
Mark Walberg does his usual semi-core acting, while Tim Roth and Michael Clark Duncan deliver amazing performances. Not only is POTA a roller coaster action/adventure, but it has its share of laughs as well. After you see the movie you may be a bit confused, but after a bit of thinking you will fully understand and be amazed at the ending!! Even though i haven’t seen the original POTA i have heard the jist of the ending, and if its correct than the new ending crushes its skull in 48 pieces!!
BEST MOVIE OF THE SUMMER!
STOP READING AND GO SEE IT NOW!!!!
A little chessy at times, but a fun flick.
I really liked how it was a little different form the first movie. But it did stay true to its campy roots.
Visually it was awesome, Tim Burton knows how to shoot a movie. The sets and camera work were great. The acting was good, but the story was predicable.
Weak script; good costumes and direction.
Not too bad!
Great visuals but there were times when the camera moved so fast that it was hard to take it all in. Story line was definitely weak and the ending left an opening for a sequel . . . wouldn’t you know? The costumes and make-up were great but it was evident that some of the actors had a hard time with the dental appliances. The ape mannerisms were very good, making this movie much better than the originals.
